London will scrap cars for free - henry k
Yes it is free in London to scrap a car.
They will even collect it for free.

Lunchtime TV item said that if you report a car with no tax it will be collected within 72 hours.

All the more reason to remember to renew the VED.

There may be get out clauses but it sounds good to me.
It is cheaper than clearing up the mess of a torched wreck etc.

This idea appears to be only for those who volunteer to have their car taken away, not for the removal of abandoned cars. I don't see why it should come out of taxpayer's money. Surely the owner should be responsible for disposing of the vehicle?

It may not be costing the taxpayer anything because the value of ferrous scrap has risen quite a lot lately. In my area (north Cambs), breakers are now offering £10 to £20 for scrap cars whereas not long ago you had to pay them to take it.

A similar scheme was offered by Plymouth City Council last year. Now as I understand you're looking at £20 per car.

I live just outside the London but, last week, took an old car to my favourite breakers yard to end its days and there was no charge.
I was more than happy as a lot of the bits originally came from this small yard and they have served me well over the years.
The 10 mile urban trip home took 2 hours by bus etc but I was pleased with the overall outcome.

fraid it wont rise.too much scrap about.what is happening is the councils are paying scrappys to take motors they would not before take.due to scrap laws the vehicles from a certain date/ie not car date.but some point this year
have to be stripped down ie all oil has to be taken from car/petrol then put in secured containers.plastics has to be stripped and so forth.it all costs.all due to environment which I agree with saves or should.having a burn out on your drive which I have just seen.old astra just burnt out also blew out BMW and recent mondeo both nearly new.Cannot imagine how owners feel

Scrap prices have been at rock bottom for a while but are now increasing - up to £50-60 per tonne now because of increase in demand for steel in far east. I think breakers could now offer owners a minimum £20 for cars delivered to them or collect free of charge to help stop car dumping. Owners are providimg them with their raw materials that they can then charge £100s for.
