Polo tried to kill me again today! - PoloGirl
Am starting to believe in jinxes.

M42, doing slightly more than 70 in the fast lane (don't pick me up on that, I know all speed limits in all lanes are the same, just can never remember which is inside and which is outside).. and Polo's bonnet came open.

It bounced up about a foot free of it's safety catch and went down again, and then managed to relocate itself in the safety catch. To make it worse, there was no hard shoulder so I had to wait until I could pull over and slam it shut, while slowing down ever so gently and trying to let some really aggressive lorry drivers know what was happening.

Have no idea how it got open, as I'm embarassed to admit I haven't checked oil or water since New Years Day (the last time I did this trip in the other direction).

Is there something I need to check to see that the safety catch is working properly or do I just put it down to one of those weird things?

(Am not even thinking about the possibility that Ka woman has sabotaged my car!!)

All a bit scary really...
Polo tried to kill me again today! - Guru-Meditation
Just check the catch and cable mech are moving freely and working as they should.

You are seriously lucky-for your bonnet to not flip all the way up, totally trash the bonnet, the windscreen, the roof and totally obscruct your vision....lucky!
Polo tried to kill me again today! - PoloGirl
Yes, let's be positive about this...

3 crashes and a bonnet flip and I'm still alive!

Luck or jinx.. you decide :-)

Yep, that car is trying to kill you! :-)

Sounds like you've been very lucky, I would get someone to have a good look at the bonnet catch and check that it's ok, that is a really serious fault. Er, not that you need me to tell you that! ;-)

PG - was the bonnet or front end worked on after your last incident? Sounds to me as if something was left misaligned? In any case the car begins to sound like bad news.

It sounds to me that the safety catch is working fine. That is what stopped your bonnet from fully opening and landing on your windscreen.

What does sound iffy is the main bonnet catch that is supposed to keep it shut until you pull the handle inside the car.

May I make a suggestion before everyone else does; GET RID OF THAT CHUFFIN' CAR!!!

I thank you.

I'd be checking the nut behind the steering wheel....

Ever seen the Film Christine about the haunted Plymouth Fury that tries to kill its owners?

Quite lucky, where I used to work, someone had a bonnet fly up at high speed, and it wrote the Escort Van off, not because he crashed, the damage it did......windscreen, roof, front pillars, bonnet, binnacle etc..all stoved in.
That bonnet flew up due to the vehicle grounding on a speed hump, as it had been repaired from an accident a few weeks before, and they also had to repair speed hump damage underneath, but after the crash, there was fresh speed hump damage that had made the slam panel misaligned.

Happened to Markko Martin in his Focus in one of last year's WRC envnts (a hot one - Cyprus or Greece?). Undeterred, he kept going with the bonnet over the screen, peering out of the gap below it. IIRC he lost only 20s over 20kms driving like this!! Biggest problem was that it blocked the air vent into the car, and by the time he got to end it was like a sauna in the car - he looked terrible when he got out. Nutter.

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....

Get it traded in ASAP before it does any real damage. You will also see if these mythical VW residual prices still hold true (although any main dealer will check to see if it has been in a scrape and......)
Polo tried to kill me again today! - PoloGirl
Thanks all...

Now you come to mention it, there's a new set of speed bumps up the road from us - seriously violent ones!

I've just spent the morning lovingly cleaning and polishing Polo (I don't only come to see my parents to use their driveway but sometimes it must look that way!) and he's soooo lovely, even though he tries to kill me.

Trading it in and getting another car just isn't an option until the summer when I graduate. For some reason which I'm failing to remember now, I gave up a promising PR career to go back to uni for 3 years and any money I make from freelance work goes on tuition fees, rent and food! (Unless of course HJ would like to employ me as PR for this site, and buy me a car!!)

Feel it's only fair to warn fellow users that the last two times I've given the car a proper clean and polish, it's been involved in some form of collision within a week - it's almost like it wants to look good on the insurance photos!!

Picture the scene. Man with hat pulled down and collar up, meets Polo in a smokey run down pub. Man says to polo
"now you listen P, this is your last chance, muck it up next time and its the breakers for you"
Money passes hands in grubby brown envelope, Polo tucks it in his glovebox and leaves into the mists of the night.

I think this Polo could seriously overtake "That Astra" for HJs preferred sponser car!

Maybe you and HF should do a swap to see if these cars behave better in the other's hands (a bit like children really).

Maybe PG you would be safer driving in something like the Top Gear Toyota Taliban pick up!

Polo tried to kill me again today! - Mapmaker
Beat me to it, 'copter. On second thoughts, perhaps she should trade it in for something a bit more exciting. Maybe with caterpillar tracks, and painted in sand-coloured camouflage. I am certain that along with those ex-police cars (white, 1 careful owner) BCA have sales of Geoff Hoon's unwanted toys. The long pole in front would be good for frightening Mrs Ka as well. And it wouldn't do 70, so there'd be no need to worry about motorways. Car dawdling in middle lane? warm him up a bit.

Go for it, PG!

If the car is truly evil, and it sounds like it is, CRUSH IT. I'm not a fan of caveat emptor. Someone who can afford it less than you may end up in trouble. End of moralising, sorry, did not intend an assault on moral high ground. But crush it, dance on its grave and take pictures for your old age.

Buy a Fiat.
Polo tried to kill me again today! - PoloGirl
Puntooo I had a FIAT before Polo - it broke down almost every day, as opposed to Polo who never breaks down and is attracted to things, on average, about once a year.

M42 beckons again tomorrow - wish me luck! :)

Was going to go on M42 today. Have changed mind and will go via Birmingham City Centre - A38 et.et. (Bit safer maybe?:-))

See the Fiat was trying to save your life, by continually breaking down and stopping you driving. The Fiat was your Guardian Angel, and you sold it. Shame on you....

Bless'ed are the Fiats. For they lead us not into temptation (to drive). Ahmen.

At the risk of sounding like Michael Winner... I'm really a very good driver! ;-)

Am back safe and well, and in record time - everyone else was avoiding the snow that never appeared!

This should probably be in the other thread but I played a lovely game with a bloke in an Audi on the way back too... he let me out, I thanked him, I let him out, he thanked me... and so on, all up the A34, M40, M42 and M5. Unfortunately he didn't seem to want to come to Wolverhampton. If only I hadn't had my nan in the passenger seat cramping my style ;-) Could have been the start of a beautiful friendship!

Oi! Only just seen this! Nobody, but nobody, gets their hands on That Astra. And the thought of it being surpassed in fame is quite crushing.

But good luck PG - maybe you should adopt the policy of never washing the car, and see how that goes...

HF, great to hear from you. I thought my post would provoke a reaction sooner or later!

As far as PG never washing her car, she may not get the chance if she keeps having it in for repairs!

this is common with older polos!! ive had it happen to me, the bonnet pull doesnt return properly,so after pulling your hood you should push the lever back again. and check for the positive click when you shut the bonnet. the secondery catch isnt that good so your lucky it didnt come right up... i bet your glove box is loose too!!!!!and you have a funny squeek from the engine they make up for it by been faithfull little cars,i have fond memorys of my polo days...........
