High Mileage Mondeo II - mikeyb
Hi there,

I currently have an Audi A4, bu since the arrival of child number 2 it has become apparent that the A4 is just to small.

A Colleague has a new shape mondeo which feels about twice the size inside of mine and I think would be more than adequate for my needs.

I have started looking around at a few and have come across a very high mileage 3 year old example. The mileage dosent bother me as I had a MK1 mondeo which had 160K on it when I sold it, but my question is does anyone here have any experience with the new shape mondeos with high mileages, and is there anything I should look for which is prone to failure?

Thanks

Nothing to do with high mileage as such but make sure the handbrake works as it should and check the bottom of the doors on the inside for corrosion

I have never owned one but would be surprised if a car the size of an A4 could not cope with 2 kids?

Is it badly designed? Is this not a car built for transporting 4 executives around in comfort?

My Estate is fine; I guess the saloon might be a bit tight on space? Still...it would suprise me.

The problem I have is that I am 6' 3" so drive with the seats all the way back - its either that or have my knees wrapped around the dash. My children are 3 weeks and 16 months old - hence both in large cumbersome car seats. To be able to use a child seat you have to have the front seats moved slightly forward as when the seats on the A4 are all the way back there is only a gap of about 2 - 3 " between back seat base and front seat back, so yes it is badly designed and no it isnt a car for tranporting 4 executives around in comfort!

My brother runs a taxi firm. His Series 2 diesel has well over 300k without a problem from the engine - oil changes every 5K.
Some others in firm have similar experience.

He has had to replace suspension parts, brake discs etc as you would expect with this amount of use, but no real trend of faulty items

Nothing particullarly jumps to mind but bear in mind the following
1. Clutch change labour expensive as you have to drop the sub frame
2. Quite renown for outer edge tyre wear if not tracking then possibly worn wishbone bushes other than that not a lot

i,ve had mine 36K 4 years faults washer pump siezed, 2 glow plugs, fronts @ every 22k, rears @ 76k on the clock, front discs and pads (£70) biggest bill Cambelt, pump belt, tensioner and anti freeze drain and refill @ Ford dealer ( £214)

I have a mkII mondy that is about at 100k, the biggest problem that i have found is the front wishbone bushes. When ever you take it for a service they try and get you to have them done !!

They should last approx 60k and cost approx 70 quid each to have done. if they do need doing make sure that they change the wishbone, thats the whole thing as when i had mine done they would only do the bushes as it was under waranty. then 30k later i needed to have one side done again as the lower ball joint had gone and that cost me 70 quid as it was out of waranty so if ou have a whole new wishbone you get new bushes and new ball joint and it only costs about 15 quid more as they don't have to mess around with the bushes.

There is another problem with theses bushes and that is that most garages do not do them properly and by most i mean 100% !!
They cust off one of the bolts on the near side under the gear box to save lifting the engine and then they put the new bolt in upside down, now this is not usually a problem and most modeys over 3 years old are probably like this, but when the engine mountings get a bit soft the bolt can start hitting the gear box as there is not enough clearance. Never heard of a damaged gear box only people complaining of a knocking noise.

Other than the above mine has been really reliable and is a very good work horse for me and my two children. and yes i know what you mean about the A4, same applies to the merc C class and BMW 3 series. It must be a german thing.

By Mondeo II do you mean the post 2000 new model or the '96 facelift?
