have noticed an intermittent "clonking" sound from the back of my carina e hatch. i have been told that it is most likely the rear.."drop links! has anyone any idea where these are situated and is it a difficult job replacing them? thanks in advance!

Never heard of drop-links at the rear.
I thought drop links were only at the front and were attached to the anti-roll bar.
I would suspect shocks or rear axle mounts to be causing clonking at back.

Or even a loose exhaust mount.

your carina e has rear drop links just as it does on the front because it also has an anti-roll bar fitted on the rear suspension, when the small ball joints on the end of the drop links have some wear in them they tend to make a knocking noise when driving over uneven surfaces so replacement is the only option to stop the noise. they are quite straight forward to replace with only a nut to undo at each end of the drop link, but would suggest you give them a good soaking with wd40 before you start. hope this helps

Just to add that the pins that locate the drop links onto the shock and anti-roll bar have an allen key hole in them to stop them rotating as you undo the nuts. With a small drill clean the holes out and use a good quality allen key or better still socket hammered into the hole otherwise you will end up cutting the nuts off as the hole rounds out.
