Window Fuse Keeps Blowing On Golf Mk3 - ammo
Apart from the jerky auto in my car, ive also noticed the windows fuse keeps blowing after every 6 weeks or so. Theres a 10amp fuse which runs the reverse lights, electric windows and electric mirrors. The fuse stays fine, then out of the blue just blows. If I rumage my hands through the wires behind the fuse box,(i dont know why, but this tends to work) i notice the fuse stops blowing. Im happy for about 6 weeks, then im back to square one. Someone did mention a faulty reverse light switch, but i have no clue where it goes.

I think you have answered your own question. There is a \'short\' somewhere - it will be a question of getting a wiring diagram and following though the wires, checking for shorts/wire damage and checking out reverse switch.

I have not come across a Golf with a shorted reverse switch which is mounted on the top of the gearbox ( not the speedo sensor ) I am assuming that that the windows wind freely without straining. Check the wiring where if goes through the door hinges I suspect that is where your problem is. Regards Peter

When fuse doesnt decide to blow, windows, mirrors, reverse lights are perfect. I'll check the wiring at the door hinges again. Last time i checked, couldnt spot anything wrong. I even took of the door trim and checked the wiring and electrical connectors there aswell. I was given a digital car electrical circuit testers with a big dial in the centre of it. I dont have a clue on how work them.

As I remember they did have a problem.1 as aprilia said and 2 the door A pillar to front o/s n/s door the wiring is very tight and tends to stretch causing a short or high resistance
in cable a sudden as you would by operating the window causes the fuse to blow.could be wrong but have come across it before.and in case you did not know the cable`s break inside the insulation so it is not possible to see it from outside
It was more luck i found it.as I said may be wrong

Have you checked in the owners or Haynes manual what the proper value of this fuse is supposed to be? 10 amps seems very low for an electric window circuit. The stall current for window motors is typically 15 amps and perhaps as high as 25 amps on some vehicles. I would expect to see a 25 or 30 amp fuse in this circuit.

To check for shorts you could try connecting an ammeter in place of the fuse and monitor it looking for sudden current spikes. You could also check the consumption of the circuit this way.
