If that is the name for them. I had never come across these before, until on buying a tyre last week the fitter remarked that it had to go on with the rotation in the direction of the arrow. He said these were becoming very common now.
So do people carry 2 spares now, one of each?

I had these fitted to a previous motor, and according to the tyre garage that fitted them in dry conditions it doesn\'t make any difference which way round they\'re fitted. They only come into operation in wet conditions. They help to disperse the water from the tread more efficiently. If you have to put the spare on in the wet, and it\'s the wrong way round to how it\'s supposed to be fitted, just drive with more caution - just like you would if it were a space saver tyre fitted.

Just found this link.

www.dunloptyres.co.uk/site/tyres/car/technicalInfo/

Which basically says "What happens if you are unfortunate enough to have a puncture and your spare wheel is fitted with a directional tyre designed to rotate in the opposite direction to the tyre which it replaces? You are recommended to treat the spare wheel as a 'Temporary spare', drive at reduced speed and have the tyre correctly refitted as soon as possible."

The tread on any tyre only comes into use in the wet - that's the whole point of the tread. You don't need tread in the dry hence slicks! Directional tyres are usually only on high performance Z rated tyres. So unless you have a performance car you are spending too much on tyres.

I had them on my old 2.0 litre Cavalier. Viking 195/60, HR-14's. Hardly high performance or z rated. £55 a corner, IIRC.

Thanks everyone.
It was a 185/14 standard profile fitted to a Volvo 240, and cost £45. Hardly a high performance motor.

I stand corrected in that case.

There are a lot mote directional tyres these days and an MOT test checks the the tyres for correct fitting. Even a Uniroyal 165-R70-13 for a Pug 106 is directional these days. Great in the wet. Regards Peter

This all blows my plan to replace my space-saver with another full size-wheel out of the water. Because I drive across France 3 or 4 times a year I have always been nervous of getting a puncture in the middle of the night and having to limp 50 miles to any open hotel, using the space saver. Looks like I won't be any better off if I get a full-size spare.

Ah well. That's life, as they say in France.

From previous comments as I read it:
If it dry then you can speed on your way.
If it is wet then take your time and there is no 50 mile restriction.
Over to you.

No, it hasn't blown anything. All you need to do is to get a full size, similar tyre, but not a directional one. If you only plan to use it as a spare, you can drive at normal speeds and in all conditions. Most people don't have spares of the same make as every other tyre on the car so you're not losing anything.

Valid point.
