i have an escort turbo diesel and recently it has developed a \'flat spot \' at low revs when cruising on the flat, also at lights or junctions sometimes it feels as though it is going to stall, it gets a \'lumpy tickover\' like a petrol car with the choke out. also there is blue smoke coming from the exhaust when this happens.(both cases but not oil smoke!) i have been told it could be a sticking injector or the idle speed compensation activator, has anybody come across this problem?

Just on the smoke issue - you say 'blue' smoke, but not oil smoke...
I think i'm right in saying that in general if you get blue smoke it is because oil is being burnt, so if the smoke is definitely blue then it's definitely 'oil smoke'.
Blue = Oil
Black = Fuel
Grey/White = Steam(Water)
Sorry no idea how to fix your problem, just thought it might help to set you onto the correct route towards diagnosis

I assume this is a standard turbo diesel (not Hdi).
Before looking at injectors, I would pay attention to the anti-stall adjustment setting on the injector pump. Haynes manual should document this procedure fairly well.

if car has egr valve then might improve with a good clean out
same as all breathers inc inlet pipes
poss turbo prob but these tend to run on there own oil/run on/acc on driving lots of black smoke

thanx for the ideas you have all come up with, i forgot to mention that this is an intermittent fault with the smoky bit , and the flat spot at low revs is there most of the time but i can drive thro it and the car pulls o k . it is just occasional tickover and low revs to keep the car cruising, the smoke is unburnt fuel you can

Are you sure your belts are OK, you have one for the Cam and one for the Pump.
I had an escort, and when it was nearly due for a belt change, some 6k mile to go, the belt jumped and the valves hit the pistons. luckly the Cam pulley key in the camshaft sheared and replaced only two valves. This produced blue smoke where the fuel was unburnt and the timing was out, although the engine was running but roughly and no noise to give the indication that valves had clashed.

just to let anyone know who may be interested the fault i posted in jan (23rd)has now been cured by my local diesel experts, they say it was a valve on the governer within the injector pump that was causing overfuelling and causing the blue smoke. not oil as someone suggested.

thanks dude i remember you telling us,remember when you use this site,all the quotes from all these lovely people(god bless ya)are just opions and guides,they def werent right about my brake problem(which i find worring)because it was a simple question with a simple answer,and no one got it,sorry one person was right.....ME,dont know why i posted the problem really,i was just testing the water init.long and short of it is ,that these guys are diamonds and have saved me money and time,keep it up init.

It is hard to tell and ps I didn`t see your post.governer is a rev limiter.it only comes in when you reach certain revs.blue smoke is caused by engine oil being burnt.ie nothing to do with fuel pump.so you may still be burning oil but dont see it.
