a new michelin pilot was fitted to the front offside alloy wheel 3 weeks ago and on 2 occasions have checked the tyre and found the pressure has been approx 1/2 what it should be.took it back to the tyre fitters they checked the tyre and showed me with the tyre in the water that there was no loss of air. they then said that i should return if the problem persisted. went back yesterday and they have now sealed the tyre. anyone else with similar probs they stated that this seems to be a regular problem with the rim and tyre not sealing effectively.

A colleague suffered this on his car, tyre was sound but when the car was moving (especially cornering) the tyre would flex and the rim/Tyre seal would fail.
This turned out to be a very small amount of carp on the tyre/rim seal, cleaned up and everything fine.

I fitted new tyres to the alloys (in very good condition) on my old Capri 2.8i four months ago. They all lost pressure in the first couple of weeks. Now three seem to be fairly stable, but the nearside rear is still losing up to 3 psi or so a week, so I'm going to have that one re-fitted. Given similar experience on my other cars (all alloys), I suspect that this is a fairly common problem with alloys, although I know not why, beyond an understandable period needed to bed in properly.

Glad to see your Capri is still running - alloys can get porous after a time (or even when new in some cases!).
As above check the tyre/rim seal is fine.

many thanks for your help i have found the local tyre specialst very helpful with the probs would you believe they have refused to charge me for repairs once for the pucture repair that could not be traced and again a few days ago when they took the alloy off and completey sealed the tyre to the alloy with sort of white compound. i am going to test the pressure again to morrow
nice to hear that you have capri 2.8i

I had this years ago on a VW Gti - it turned out to be faulty casting ie porous wheels. One would go flat over several days and the other would go to about 15psi and then hold pressure. I checked the wheels by putting them in a very large sink and cheking where the air bubbles came from; it turned out to be from the metal rather than the rubber itself or the tyre rim. Hope this helps although your local tyre man sounds good! junction

many thanks your reply needless to say the problem is only with one wheel will check on the pressure to morrow. from first glance the pressure appears ok can recommend h j's tyre pressure guage from the american tool co as per his recommended suppliers. bought mine approx 7 yrs ago and is far easier and better to use that the pencil shaped ones.the local tyre specialist is based is milton keynes for info.
