Civic Type R. Gorgeous looks, great engine, fine handling, Honda quality.
Golf isn't THAT good, and it's been superseded now.
Peugeot is, well, French, with all that means about quality and relaibility.
Keep the BM? Well don't you need a change?
Another possibility: MINI Cooper S (Chilli pack is a must-have) if room not an issue.

Has to be the Civic - reliability plus a cracking drive. If you can live with the van looks - but then if you need space it turns itself into a hot van at weekends.
Whatever you do don't buy a Peugeot - take it from one who knows...

Agree. Not into this type of car, but look where Honda is in the Customer reliability surveys......and then check where VW is these days.

AD - take it from one who knows what? ..
Speaking as one who likes Peugeot, I wouldn't advise a GTi either. Can't offer any experience of a 206 specimen, but they don't seem to have earned the cachet of the 205, which perhaps even AD might admit was a fairly special car. I would only say that unless it has a bigger pedal box than the standard 206, it is unlikely to suit anyone with larger than average feet. I found the idea of an emergency stop rather unsettling.
And the 206 range is built at Ryton, so make of that what you like.

Why not check out a Lex IS 300? Sequential auto only which is a shame, but great value, good looks and reputation and a cracking drive.

Golf - heavy and not that fast.
Honda - proven reliability and Honda are renowned for making the best petrol engines fitted to passenger cars (and why are you buying a fast car in the first place, if not for the engine......)
206GTI - just a dressed-up 206.
Basically only 1 "choice" then.

No brainer - Honda wins every time.

Don't get me wrong - I like and have owned Pugs (and drive one now) - just my personal experiences haven't been great - too many niggles, poor build quality, rattles everywhere. I had a test drive in a "standard" 206 GTi and wasn't impressed.
That said my old 205GTi was special enough to forgive all such problems. My current 307 isn't - but it's big and roomy and when it goes wrong the lease company pick up the tab.

I'm not sure why folks get all misty-eyed over 205GTIs. I had a D-reg 1.6 (1987) from new: a real dog quality-wise. The Golf GTI 16V I had at the same time was just in another league (now I am going misty-eyed).
Also got to 'own' new SWMBO's F-reg 1.6. Better car; eminently chuckable but otherwise pretty utilitarian; no class, nothing I could respect.

I am fortunate enough to have friends who between them have the golf v6 4motion and the honda civic type r.
Now the guy who has the golf 4motion has had nothing but trouble with it. It is one of those cars that has been in and out of two different dealers in a bid to have its various problems sorted but neither seem able to keep it on the road. Its one of those that spends more time being fixed than it does in the owners possession, and it isn't through neglect or abuse. Still its a fantastic car when it is running right.
The civic type r on the other hand would be my choice. They are a fantastic motor as well, but seem pretty much trouble free. Probably something to do with the Japanese reliabilty.
The peugeot 206 gti, well its a peugeot... need I say more?

thanks for the advice people. The peugeots outers straight away! (although I to had a 205 gti once - and i liked it).
Really surprised about whats been said about the V6 4motion as ive had a few Golf last one was a VR6 which i had chipped etc etc had every thing done to it , biggest mistake ever getting rid.
the BMW (328i coupe) is going long story but it has to go.
Ive basically got about £15,000 and yes i admit there is a bit of a boy racer in me (at 36). I want the power and speed, Im really warming to idea of the Civic type r but for that amount of money do you get as much i.e climate etc that you can find with the golf.
is there anything else i should consider? for the money i have i want as new as possble. Im not after a big battleship size car though and i cant afford the a mitsibishi evo (shame) havent really considered a scoobie

Ive actually found another car to go for and the missus likes the sound of it (she cant understand my need for speed), its the diesel golf with 150bhp sounds very enticing. Ive also found a company who reckon they can remap the ecu by up to 30% on the diesel engine.(well thats what they claim on thier website and im well up for that as 150 bhp vw reckon 7.6sec 0-60)
180 bhp on a diesel, loverly, also ive found some reports written by owners who have raved about this vehicle. One even reckoned that this vehicle is actually 170bhp + remap 200bhp ... nice!) Getting very drawn to it have found a garage which has one so gonna go there in the morning. I used to have a G reg 1.6 golf td and it was a great car, so considering the advancement of these engines am very keen
