If you get an email from alledgedly PayPal with an attachment with a .pif file extension DO NOT OPEN IT! They are asking you to fill in the attached file with all your personal information.

The text says that your account will expire in five days, coinciding with christmas nicely! I\'m sure it is a hoax email with a virus attachment so be warned.

Happy Christmas to all in the Backroom

Thanks Charles. I shall leave this here for a few hours before making read only. Further info can be found in \"I have a question\" www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=18252 as this warning pops up fairly frequently.

I can confirm that you are right Charles. After being a victim to this hoax myself. A Destructive re installations of the operating system along with all the problems that creates was necessary before I could get back on line.

Having said that, it activated without me opening the attachement - so be warned!

You\'d think Paypal and E bay would have had the decency to post a note about that on their website wouldn\'t you??? - Oh silly me, I forgot that they are a Commercial profit making organisation - unlike this website that exists for the good of its regulars.

The clock is ticking.....

I did post a new thread on exactly this on the 9th - unfortunately someone saw fit to incorporate it into 'I have a question v.24' so it might easily have been missed by you.

Sorry to hear of your experience, Hugo.

Using the preview view in Outlook or Outlook Express causes the mail item to be "opened" which can trigger a malicious attachment. Turning off preview won't necessarily help, but it's yet another safety measure that is easily taken.
