Extended Warranty - helicopter

My Honda Civic turns three years old next week and the local dealer is offering one years extended warranty for just under £300.

The only problem I had in the warranty period was an electric window motor replacement.

Its just had service, MoT and two new Bridgestones, incidentally supplied and fitted by the dealer cheaper than than any of the local tyre specialists.

Is the extended warranty worth the investment or should I keep the money?

I think it's a general rule of thumb with extended warranties (not just for cars) that you keep your money. You MIGHT be unlucky, but with a Civic (provided you keep up basic maintenance) I guess you are far more likely to be £300 better off.

After all, insurance companies sell them to make money, don't they? - yours.

Sounds expensive, but we don't know how comprehensive it is.

Ask if it's backed by Warranty Holdings, they offer policies that let you re-claim the warranty cost in full, if you don't use it.You get maximum peace of mind & your cash back, if you're not unlucky enough to have a problem.

Also take a look at WarrantyDirect on the left menu, here.

Thanks for the suggestions.I will look at other Warranty companys.

The dealer warranty is advised as a full parts and labour warranty but I've just had a phone price - I haven't yet seen the exact details - don't you find that its always whatever the warranty excludes that is most likely to fail.

I seem to recall a recent thread on warrantys where the main argument was whether or not consequential damage was excluded ie twopenny seal or timing belt tensioner goes , engine ruined and all you get back is the cost of replacing the failed part.

It did strike me as a high price given the Honda reputation for reliability and I'm sure that if anything went in the course of the next year or so I would get goodwill from Honda. I guess what I was really asking is has any backroomer had trouble with older (New shape) Civics. What, if anything, is likely to go wrong?

it's a HONDA!! not much likely to go wrong!(admits to being biased) apart from the usual wear-outable bits (brake pads..etc).

£300.00 buys a lot of fuel...12mnths insurance, nearly 2yrs r/tax, the next due service, and at least 10yrs worth of bodywork protection (wax polish) :-)

if you can't get a "money-back" scheme as already suggested, you might as well keep it...and get the interest!!

I had a Peugeot 306 that i bought with a standard one year warranty and extended it at purchase for a further 1 year. Didnt claim anything in the first year, but the 2nd year service (2 months before extended warranty expiry) highlighted problems that required £1200 worth of work - all covered under warranty. Glad i extended it, but that was a peugeot. On a Civic i would probably chance it.
