Escort - exhaust banging - Butler
Ive got an L reg Escort and when there is 3 or more people in the car there's sometimes a banging noise of the exhaust hitting the floor when pulling away, and going over speed bumps is obviously very difficult with any weight in the car!
Ive had the suspension and exhaust checked and there was nothing wrong. Is this a common problem for Escorts of this age, or is there anything you suggest I look at?

I have a J-reg escort (no cat) and I have the same problem if its fully loaded. The back suspension seems pretty soft. If you look under the car you can see that the lowest point is part of the exhaust. You have to remember that this car was designed before the UK went speed-bump mad, hence the knackered front wishbones on old Fords and the grounding out.

I have to say that the exhaust doesn't bang on pulling away! Are you sure that it isn't something else? The gearbox mount is a quite common fail point as are the wishbones. However if these fail you can feel it when pulling away and in the case of the wishbones the handling is even worse than usual (yes it can get worse!)
