Hugo,
Brave man, well done.
Ask Mark (RLBS) for my home mail address and I'll tell you more about the floor job....and loads more that will help you target where to look for initial problems.
I don't want to frighten everyone else with the issues!!
In any case if the Taliban get to hear how easy they are to maintain they'll all want one and who will buy Toyotas then?

Just the 'initial problems'? - why not tell him where to look for all the other problems too... ;-)
Hugo is a brave man indeed (there should be a BR 'medal of honour' to accompany such a purchase)
I can't imagine any Disco, not even an easily maintained one (is there such a thing?) would find much favour with the Taliban - I doubt they maintain their vehicles at all, which is why Toyota etc. are favoured in the more far flung parts of the world. You'll be suggesting that they use Citroen XM's next!

Don't suppose they rust in Afganistan/Iraq.That will make the Taliban rush out and 'buy' them.

Had a quick look at that site. Looks a gooden.
I'll have proper look later when I have the Landrover in my possession. May mean more to me then.
A Slight change of plan, got the money today, but it's going to be picked up in the next couple of days. Apparently an inside light got left on yesterday when we looked at it and the battery was flat this morning, though it started first time when I drove it.
I think the seller's being over cautious and getting it checked out tomorrow, just in case - message left via the wife so don't know really.
Not too concerned as I can't drive it until My L reg Xantia's gone. It will be parked up at the inlaws until then.
Thanks again for all the advice and cheers everyone!

Another useful site Hugo is
www.landroverenthusiast.com
There are quite a few 4x4 sites which seem to be inhabited by very knowledgible people. You can always find someone who has had your problem before. That\'s not being defeatest. It\'s just that owning any Land Rover product will come with a few problems so it\'s good to be prepared.

"an inside light got left on yesterday when we looked at it and the battery was flat this morning"
Time for a new battery? Not trying to be negative, Hugo, really, but since you haven't actually paid for it yet...
|
Well That is what I was told this morning. In any case, a new battery would not have been the end of the world. An MM said, set aside £500 for fixing unseen faults, and I have done.
However, I have now found out from the owner that the problem is actually down to the sterter solenoid not clicking in.
Apparently therre is a fuse attached to the solenoid relay which blew. This is a cheap component, but the concern is obviously why it blew. Short Circuit is the obvious answer but where?
The lady left it in the hands of an auto electrician.
I'm not going to reject the car for one minor electrical fault, especially as she's undertaken to sort it before I buy it.

Well you gotta laugh!
Picked it up this evening and drove it the short distance to my mother in law's house where it will be parked up until I am ready to insure it.
We all looked at it then I decided to move it to allow easy access around the house etc.....
Only I couldn't. D*** thing wouldn't B***** start!!
Opened the bonnet to find 'that fuse' has blown.
A discussion with this auto electrician revealed that this fuse and holder was probably a later addition to protect another part of the starter circuit from a short.
He gave me a handful of fuses and we spoke a litte about possible causes.
A call to Roger Young Landrover in Saltash should be in order tomorrow to try to establish likely causes of short circuits of this nature.
In the mean time I'm sure the site will endulge me if I start a thread in Technical Matters to ask the BR, to prevent this thread becoming a hybrid of the two.
Now who said something about that BR Bravery Medal......

The joys of earning a Disco - perhaps you should keep one of the Citroens - at least they are (relatively!) reliable!!
Good luck!

Thanks for that cheer Phil :)
Now I know why they call it a Discovery
Owning one helps to discover new ways to break down!

Well
The problem seems to have 'gone away'.
Today after selling the Citroen, I moved the insurance onto the Discovery.
Apparently, the insurers are insisting on a Thachem 1 approved alarm, so I have to take it into an alarm centre to get the current system identified and vetted. If it's not up to scratch it will have to be upgraded.
I saw a Land Rover alarm on Ebay but the seller could not confirm that it complies.
The insurers have allowed me a weeks grace to get this sorted one way or the other after my explaining that I couldn't do anything until the Discovery was insured, which is pretty reasonable of them.
The problem is that both RC fobs have been lost along the way, so I'm after a replacement. Now - someone mentioned a website here????
Apart from that - I found an excuse to go into our nearest town tonight and get some diesel. It was a real pleasure to drive. It's not the sort of vehicle you can thrash but it does keep up the momentum. The clutch is nice and sharp. The PAS works brilliantly.
Both my children insisted in sitting in the fold down seats in the rear. The only problem with these is that when the vehicle rolls, as it does, they can hit their heads on the window at the back, though not hard enough to dissuade them from clambering in the back again I'm sure!
Apparently, there are a few good off roading areas near me, where I won't be stepping on toes, so I shall have to go with a couple of people that I promised soon.
You'll be the first to know when I go off roading - because I'll rant on about it for ages I'm sure!

I've got a wading plug for the bottom of the timing belt cover. When I've found it I'll bung it in the post!

The good news and the bad news
Which do you want first?
Well the bad news - we found out that the little electrical problem that we encoundered - erm hadn't gone away completely.
RAC bloke came out within about half an hour and more or less diagnosed the fault as the solenoid on the starter.
However it then proceeded to work again with the key, so on our way we went, armed with screwdriver to allow us to short the solenoid out should we need to.
The good news is - after I found that the solenoid could not easily be bought separately, I found a complete NEW starter with solenoid for £56 including VAT. That beat ALL the prices I had seen in LR Monthly etc. Apparently this outfit was concentrating on battery sales and was running other lines down, so had knocked down all the prices to ship them out. Still got 6 month warranty on it though.
After picking it up, as if to confirm I needed to fit it, the car would not start again. Fortunately I was parked on a hill so it bump started.
Fitted it yesterday in about an hour and a half and so far 1st time every time!
More good news, Renault Family, if you ever need towing or pulling out of anywhere, I'm sure the Disovery's up to it :)

Well people
Today saw a Thatcham 1 alarm fitted to \'Diva\' (Disco Diva - gedit - BR groan!) Don\'t worry I haven\'t given it one of those naff names!
Having considered ALL the advice sought about which alarm to go for (including very good BR input), and having seen the Laserline product, which I have to say looks like you would be hard pressed to do any damage to it with a very big hammer, I decided to go with my instincts and agree to have it fitted.
One of the features I liked about the Laserline is that the main Control unit is fitted somewhere in the cockpit, so even if someone actually got the bonnet open there is no change of them overiding it. In addition, there are a lot of dummy wires etc ready to pose scholes of red herrings to any would be car theif. Also, to avoid any further confusion the original Land Rover alarm has been disabled.
The only downside is that I had to kill most of the day in Plymouth while this was being done. As I am not a shopaholic, this was a very painful experience!
The paperwork I got was the receipt for £260 and the VSIB certificate, handwritten plus copies for my inserers. Apparently the annual check is a common requirement for insurance companies, so I need to be on the ball here.
The vehicle proved to be especially useful as I managed to salvage some heavy near railway sleeper gauge timbers that will be used to landscape the garden from a nearby workshop that had been vacated. The timbers were actually an inspection pit cover, removed after the pit was filled and screeded over. All but one actually fitted in the boot without the seats being folded down and the extra weight made no difference to the performance/handling of the vehicle.
I managed a cool 80mph on the A 38 expressway in both directions, without really trying. The top speed is supposed to be 95. But 80 is faster than most other things on the road. The handling at that speed is actually excellent IMO for that type of vehicle, and it is sooo quiet! Mind you I do drive that 2.4T Trafic.
The only slight snag is that, having driven into Plymouth with the sidelights on and being flashed by an oncoming motorist, I found out that the OS sidelight bulb holder has seen better days and needs a permanent stand in as it keeps falling out of its hole in the back of the main headlight. So, off to Roger Young Land Rover soon then.
BTW Mike, If you see an Orange and Purple Renault Trafic - that\'s me - can\'t miss it!

That joke is worse than mine!
Charles
Thanks for the wading plugs. Got them this morning, now to persuade SWMBF (F=Feared) that I can go off roading in it!
All
So far I've set the alarm off about 3 times. I thought I had the recurrence of that starting problem again, but found out it was due to the alarm re arming itself as I didn't start it within secs of disarming it.
Insurance are happy, and I can now unlock it via remote.
