A piece in the local newspaper I thought interesting.

20 year old lad, gets stopped for doing 93mph in a 60mph limit after trying to outrun a marked police car. He admits that not only does he have no insurance, he does not even have a driving licence.

What do you think he got when it ended up in court?

I wish.

He was fined £80 for speeding, £120 for no insurance, and £50 for no licence, the total of £250 to be paid at £10 a week. Oh and 6 months disqualification, which would have some effect if he had a licence.

However the best bit was at the court hearing the magistrates remited £452.40 of fines that he had presviously failed to pay.

So the answer is he ended up better of by £202.40

I dispair.

The law is only there to keep "middle England" in check.

The lawless end of society have little to lose and so scoff at it, and the well heeled end of society pay for a top Barrister to defend them.

I'm sure though that this will knock him into being a law abiding citizen, the compassion and all that.

Oh! I just remembered, I,ll just go and advise my 19 year old son not to pay his insurance premium of £1,356, as his fine for not having any should only amount to £120 or thereabouts.

What me cynical? Bitter and twisted? No.

I doubt it, he'll probably do it again to see if he can get this fine wiped too and end up owing nothing.

And very shortly, it'll be a fixed penalty offence - as will driving w/o a licence - because the government believe they can catch such people with Automatic Numberplate Recognition Systems and they will pay the fines, like middle-england speeders do... so the logic is, the fines can be used to fund the ANPR, just like speed fines pay for 'safety' cameras... except that they won't pay the fines, of course!

To be honest I cannot understand any 18 year old paying a four figure amount to insure a 15 year old Nova nowadays if they know the penalty (if caught) is less than the cost of one months premium.....

I'm a loser, baby....so why don't you kill me?!

As this nice young man obviously had one or two prior convictions, it is a shame the magistrates did not decline jurisdiction in this case. One of my more irascible colleagues might have taken a dimmer view of his offences. On the other hand, some of my colleagues are very liberal and may well have merely slapped his wrist. Now you know why I remain anonymous!
