Where are the caravans? - Pat L
I've just got back from a family holiday to Devon and couldn't help but notice a distinct lack of caravans on the road. Is it just peculiar to my routes/holiday venue or has anyone else noticed this?

Surely the good old caravan can't be on the decline? If so, who can we moan about instead?

After this weekend, I'd hazard a guess they all melted!

Funny that, Just got back from devon myself and i thought "****** caravans" Saw 5 broken down (the tow car) in 10 miles of the A303.

No theyre not on the decline according to the trade press. They're just not holding up the traffic as much as they did 20 years ago so you probably aren't noticing them.

Anyway the Back Room Anti Caravan Klan (BRACK) will I'm sure comment....

Many of them are actually travelling late at night!
Was on the A303 at 1.00am Friday night/Saturday morning travelling east bound near Amesbury, and there were convoys of caravans heading west.
It shows that many caravan owners are responsible, and indeed sensible, as the temperature was almost normal at that time!

Slightly off thread, Friday night had to pick something up from Slough so took the bike.

6pm from Old Windsor through to Slough SOLID traffic, nothing moving and looked like the M4 wasn't moving either, temperature well over 90.

I though those poor s**s ain't going anywhere for a couple of hours at least.

No caravans though...

The caravans I did see did seemed to be moving a bit faster than I remember from recent years - a few on the M5 were doing over 70 mph. Too fast in my opinion.

And if they're travelling at night then good on 'em! If they could just pull over occasionally on A roads when there's a queue of cars behind them....

going over 60mph with a caravan is stupidity, they just flip over, the faster you're going the easier they go. see them all the time up the motorways just a pile of match sticks in the middle lane, with owners trying to stop their clothes blowing up the motorway, kids crying on hard shoulder.

See lots of people without extender mirrors, they just pull out infront of faster drivers.

Badly loaded caravans sway all over the road even with a stabiliser, I wonder how many people realise that by the time you got your gas bottle on the front, battery under the sink, and spare wheel, the caravan is probably over weight, most of the ones I see got bikes, and patio tables and chairs crammed in.

Old caravans falling to bits, rusty chassis, windows falling out, and lights that don't work properly.

And I used to be and still would be a caravanner if I could afford a big long wheelbase 4x4 and a 16ft van.

I concur with earlier comments...caravanners tend to travel in early morning and late evening.

Judging by my last two weeks commuting most caravans this year seem to be updside down at M3 junction 13 :-(((((
