Hi,

I have a Kia Ceed 1.6 2014 reg. I had a front tyre (alloy) making a tinny whirring noise and the tyre losing pressure. Eventually this stopped after the brakes were replaced (and after 7 separate visits to Parks Kia who have been a nightmare) but a year later I'm still getting low tyre pressure.

I've had 2 different Parks Kia dealerships check the tyre and both can't find anything wrong. I recently had the problem tyre replaced and the next day the new one was almost flat! I've sprayed soapy water to check for a leak round the bead and valve but no indication anything is wrong. I'm assuming it's a wheel bearing but I'm at my wit's end and Parks Kia have been no help.

Can anyone give advice on this please? I'm literally spinning my wheels!

Seems like the alloy wheel is damaged and either not sealing on the rim or a crack somewhere in the alloy. You need to go to a tyre fitter and put the whole wheel/tyre in a bath of water

I can’t see how a wheel bearing would cause a tyre to deflate. The tyre seals on the wheel, nowhere near the bearings.
My first thought was that the wheel is porous, and. as above, immersing the wheel/tyre assembly in water may show results.
It could be corrosion in the wheel on the surface that seals against the tyre bead, or corrosion around the valve. A tyre specialist who deals with wheels and tyres all day and every day will sort it out more successfully than a main dealer who does tyres as a sideline.

Metal wheels do not get 'porous' as they age. The likely reasons for slow pressure loss are [1] an oblect penetrating the tyre somewhere, [2] a faulty valve, [3] a crack in the metal caused by a pothole, or [4] most likely at 6 years old, slow corrosion at the bead, which can be rectified by removing the tyre and cleaning up the mating surfaces. One wheel cost me £30 recently at ATS.

Did you take the wheel off to check the bead on the inner side? It's much easier to detect a tiny bead leak with the wheel flat on level ground. Inflate the tyre to at least 5psi above recommended pressure. Presumably you have inspected and sprayed the whole tyre with detergenty water to exclude puncture. If still no result, clean the inside of the wheel and paint or spray with detergent water to detect any tiny crack(s) in the metal.

if they cannot find a leak in the tyre ask them to paint the wheel inside, this seals the alloy so it doesn`t leak (sometimes they get small cracks they cannot see) if the tyre appears ok, very surprised they have not done this anyway as cracked alloys are common

Thanks for all the replies. All good advice and I needed the tyre off to have a look at the alloy so took it to a wheel specialist today.

They spotted bead sealant before the tyre was even off. The alloy is caked in it which means they've probably known the alloy needs replaced. There is corrosion which is what I expected but Parks Kia have had the car in their workshop plenty of times for this same issue and haven't thought to refurbish the alloy? Or ask me to replace it? Hell at this stage I would have just paid to get a brand new alloy and they wouldn't have heard from me again.

The wheel specialists are working on it and let me take a video to show where the corrosion/problem is so I'm submitting a complaint (I hate to be that guy but I've had this issue just under a year with Parks trying to hold them to account) and with the video and a written report I'm hoping I'll get somewhere.

The alloy is caked in it which means they've probably known the alloy needs replaced.

Had this happen on a set of wheels in the past, only a year old (just out of warranty) they were those pesky diamond cut ones that always corrode. Local tyre shop took off the tyres, cleaned the beads on wheel and tyre and refitted using an orange gunge that cured black. They didn't cake it on, just the same as using tyre soap. They were fine for about 2 years and then started again. Tyres needed replacing so had the wheels blasted and properly painted (etch primer, primer, colour and lacquer) and they never gave trouble whilst I had the car (another 5 years).

Bet the OP's wheels are Diamond cuts, the ones on our Kia were painted and never had an issue. Kia diamond cut ones were notorious for this.
