What a tremendously good reason to change the law: everybody does it or wants to do it so it should be legal. Sounds like a much better way to get elected: appeal to the lowest common denominator with easy-fix solutions to complicated problems. Tabloid politics in other words. In any case I reckon at least half the vehicles on your average stretch of motorway at any one time are travelling at 70 or below. Quite a lot of them are doing it in lane three with their brake lights glaring.

We are a fantastic source of revenue and employment and are a completely captive audience.
Nobody will ever do anything that seriously threatens that situation.

I heard it said that the speed limit either remains at 70 with tolerance or a zero tolerance 80, which amounts to pretty much the same thing, apart from the headlines it grabs.

"apart from the headlines it grabs."
Ah, indeed, exactly so.

This is obviously a Tory point scoring scheme but the idea does have merit. Several European countries are increasing speed limits to improve road safety and a couple are removing speed cameras because of the negative effect they have on road safety.
The sad thing is that the UK once had one of the best road safety records with falling accident rates and we now have a poor record with increasing rates.
