Swapping a private plate - NAthan smith

Hi all picking up my new car on sat but have a query about how to swap the plates over. Reading around the plate transfer can now be done online. So how does it work with the v5 as my current car has the private plate on it? Do i ask the garage to send the v5 off until I can confirm the plate change?

Swapping a private plate - NAthan smith

So picked up my new car and all the faffing around swapping over the paperwork. Currently waiting for the new v5 in my name to arrive in the doormat. When it does i can apply to put my new plate on. I know I have to contact my insurer again but does the tax automatically continue ? Can find answer on DVLA website ?! Please help
