Why do some cars stick around - Car

Whilst looking for a new used car to me I've noticed some of them have been on sale at the dealers for 3 months or more.

Nothing appears to be wrong with these cars and are comparatively priced against others.

Any clues as to why some car stick?

Sometimes cars just seem to get stuck on the lot. There’s no real reason sometimes.

Agree with SLO76. If any of these cars are of interest-you are of course in a strong position to try and do a deal. There is nothing a dealer loathes more than stock that won't shift. It's his £capital not making money.

A friend of mine offered £28K for a £32K BMW once. Sales guy said "no" , my friend said " I've got £28K now, have a word with your manager and see what you can do?"

He got it at £28k

Cheeky offer often steals it.

A friend got his new BMW 5 Series for 25% off the normal price. He likes doing deals. And it was the outgoing model.

A few years ago I offered £3800 for a 2.5 year old Hyundai Accent (sticker price was £4999) and the offer was accepted. It was a boring base model with 17k miles, but served us well for 5 years.

Yes - in a different league, but about 20 years ago I offered £2K for a nice 205 up for 2995. I was surprised not to have to barter at all. Perhaps it had been there for a while and I was the first interested punter.

Large cars with big engines plus high mileage at four years old are still probably difficult to sell. I remember noticing a nice looking Audi A6 2.8SE which had been on the forecourt for a good while - just over 4yrs old and just under 80,000m needing a major service including cambelt, for £9k plus. I offered £8k and was refused. A week late the salesman rang me up to ask if I was still interested. I never needed to change its cambelt - still going strong 10yrs and 50,000 miles later when I sold it. Such cars are great value for money for low mileage drivers like myself.

Forgive me-So cam belts don't need changing till beyond 130,000 miles or might you have thought delaying change was a risk worth taking?

Sometimes staff are told to get money in quickly. Perhaps the company is flying close to the edge and struggling to survive so they’ll offload stock either to auction or be willing to take daft offers.

I’ve had dealers phone me almost throwing stock at me desperate for money in the door. Sadly the two dealers I remember most fondly for this no longer exist... wonder why.
