Any - HJ – Top 10 best snow socks - Theophilus

A very (un)helpful comparison!

Reads like a sales catalogue - no indication at all of whether the compiler of this list has actually tested any of these in the snow to judge which are the easiest to fit (in poor weather) and which give the best traction and drive-ability when roads are covered with snow and ice.

How about a real-world comparison?

PS – for what it’s worth, the Silknet snow socks actually do work very well – I’ve had a set in my car for the past 8 winters and never needed to fit them!

Haven't seen this article, any chance of a link please?

I've never used snow socks personally, but they make sense.

As for ease of fitting, they must be a doddle because us lorry drivers are supposed to be slipping full chain sets (weighing what? about 3oz wet through :-) on and off our drive axles every few minutes according to some on here, the same lot who won't be terribly impressed at what the road surface looks like after a couple of thousand 10 ton axles shod on chains have beaten it to death.

Having used chains (for mud) regularly in E Africa, I bought a pair of snow chains when returning to UK (v heavy snow winter 1978 / 79 if I remember correctly) - however didn't use them much after that winter, and thought the snow socks made an ideal compromise to keep in the boot - but as I say, I've never had the need to put them to the test., so I guess they've worked well!

I have used them on our Yaris. Worked well. Make? Dunno.Not fun when covered in snow and trying to remove them.

Tried fitting chains on a car once. A horrible job - even in the warm weather when I tried it as a test.. I would imagine it would take HOURS and several hoists to fit on a lorry.

I've seen them being fitted on the program Ice Road Truckers. They do look fiddly, and it's anyones guess how long it takes as they cut a lot of the footage. The difference there is that the roads are temporary. No tarmac to destroy.

I don't know about HGV's but back 2010 I purchased a set of chains for when I went to visit family in the Alpine region of France (remember, the cold and very snowy December)

They were fiddly to fit, but I can't say if they were any good as the winter tyres didn't let me down at any time. Never got to use them, now redundant as present car has different size wheels.

I have a pair of snow socks, Fix&GoTex, which I used once to get out of a very snowy sloping car park and on to the main roads. A holiday was booked darn sarf, where there was no snow.

Worked well, provided plenty of traction where the Barum summer tyres did not. Easy to fit, but hardly enjoyable. Used for less than 1/2 mile and showing signs of wear even though I stopped as soon as clear tarmac appeared. They would fit my current car and are sitting in the garage. I have now fitted all seasons tyres though, which remain untested in snow.

My 8 year old snow socks remain in the car as a talisman keeping the snow at bay ... but my question remains regarding the basis for HJ's "Good Garage Guide" recommendation - what value does a list like this have if the reporter hasn't tested and compared all the available makes before coming up with a useful "Top Ten"?
