Lubrication for cabriolet hood mechanism - ShereKhan
Hi,

I'm about to have my hood mechanism repaired thanks to a seized joint. I have been told that the mechanism should be maintainace free. The car is a Peugeot 306 Cabriolet.

However I want to use a good lubricant that will prevent anymore damage to the hood mechanism. However I don't know what lubricant I should use here. WD40 comes to mind.

Any ideas anyone?

Does the person doing the repair and/or the main dealer have any ideas? I would have thought that WD40 might be a bit 'light' for the job. There used to be a spray grease that motorcyclists used on their chains - that might be better but I wouldn't be sure!

I haven't asked him. He is just doing the removal of the fabric and welding then refitting the fabric.

I was going to use MS4 silicone grease, but it could be messy to use. So I was wondering what is the recommended lubricant.

I did see some chain wax for bikes in Halfords, is that the same stuff that are thinking of?

Yes I guess it is although I hadn't thought of it as wax. I think it sprays on in an almost liquid form and then gels a bit,. in contact with the air, so that it doesn't get hurled off the chain

SK - WD40 is not a lubricant, it's a penetrating fluid good for loosening rusted metal interfaces, or protecting against water penetration. However when you have chosen your lubricant, you might use a little WD40 to carry it into the joint/parts you want to lubricate. You would want it to remain there a lot longer than straight WD40 would.

agree WD 40 is too light, rocol sapphire is a ptfe loaded spray - if it easly get at able.
The bike chain stuff is ok, was available in spray and tube.
It should be a yearly task also not apply and forget !
good luck

Sherekhan,
silicon grease is ok, but tends to run in hot temperatures and isn't really a lubricant, more an electrical insulator/anticorrosion grease for electrical connections.
I would first apply some light oil to the joints operate the hood a few times to ensure penetration then wipe of the surplus, after that i would then apply a high meting point grease and repeat the procedure, obviously this needs to be done on a regular say 4 monthly cycle as you would with the door hinges.

Didn't realise that door hinges should be done every four months! On my old Rover I just left them to be done in the annual service. I take it the Peugeot isn't as good as my old Rover 214 SEi.

My father works in the aircraft industry, I'll see if he can get some roccol sapphire spray or equivalent. Excuse my ignorance, but I'm more of a electrical rather than mechanical person, where would I go normally to such an item? Many thanks to all for the advice given so far.

Check your service schedule for advice on door hinges. Some do need periodic lubrication, some don't - Rovers 200/400/600/800/25/45 DO NOT!! These should be cleaned ONLY - WD40 can be used for this but excess should be wiped off. You should, however, clean and lubricate Rovers door check arms at least once a year (graphite loaded grease is best, but gen purp will do).

I would have thought spray grease would be fine for you hood - it is quite thin and will penetrate quite well - Comma do one with chain lubricant mixed in it. I would avoid silicon grease - get this on your paint work and it will ruin your wax finish. Most automotive OEMs ban any silicon product from their sites.

ShereKhan,
You don't have to lubricate hinges every 4 months, i was generalising, i once had a car which had dropped on the hinges due to lack off lub' but the car was 6 years old.

i use silicon on my roof rails with no detrimental effect to the paint work.

You can always recognise the cars whose owners oil the door hinges every 4 months - they're the ones with oil stains on the door sills! :o)

PTFE Spray Grease. Any good auto shop or even Halfords. Regards Peter
