Peugeot 206 Verve - Problems selecting gears, car pops into neutral - OceanMan

My 55 reg plate 1.4L petrol 206 seems to have a dodgy gear box. It feels looser than the cars ive driven before, and sometimes I'll attempt to put it in fourth only for it to snap back into neutral. Ithink this has happened in a couple of other gears too, but im not certain

My first instinct was to blame myself and assume I'm being too soft with the gears, and that I just need to get used to it. However, this has never happened before in any other car and I'm very ignorant regarding mechanical issues andI'm worried that it could be the sign of a big problem that will only get worse if I don't get it looked at ASAP.

Is this a common problem? Ive done some googling but I can't find much info about it. The car passed an MOT a month ago with no advisories on the gears or clutch and I've only driven it 5 times since.

Thanks a lot

-Assuming this is a manual box?

then usually faulty rods on the gearbox.

There's three of them and they do wear out.

Not too expensive and fairly easy to fit,

They just pop off and new ones pop on.

I've owned or driven about fifteen 205s over the years. Two of them dated about 1992 (K plate) had a gearbox which used to pop out of third - not under load, fortunately, which would have been awkward - and I have seen another case reported on here. So it looks to me as if there may have been a faulty run of boxes from Peugeot at that time.

Don't know whether adjusting or replacing the linkage rods would help. Ask a gearbox repair specialist.

Gearboxes and clutches are not tested on the MOT. The test is for safety items.

Just consider that during the MOT the car is driven onto the ramp and off the ramp into the brake rollers, it probably only uses first and reverse at the speeds involved. How would the tester become aware of gearbox issues doing that?
