Ford Fiesta ecoboost 1.0 - Car Intermittently not starting - Ellissmith

Hi, my car failed to restart after parking. I was helped by a person with jump leads, and the next day following the fitting of a new battery and new ignition switch the problem still persists Intermittently. The main dealer checked it for four hours but the diagnostics could not find a fault. It's 3 years old and done 47,000 miles (a driving school car ). Someone is taking a driving test in 2 weeks and I'm worried the car might not start at the start of the test. Any help would be appreciated!

Did it have flat battery symptoms? Was there just a click when you turned the key or did it spin over quickly?

It just made a soft buzzing type of noise. Not as if the engine was trying to start.

The noise and the fact that jump leads worked does make it sound like a flat battery. A replacement battery hasn’t helped, so there’s a possibility that there is something draining the battery when the ignitions off.
Finding the cause can be difficult. Try a specialist auto electrician and also look on fiesta forums to see whether there are any common causes.
One of the new super compact jump start packs to keep in the glove box may be a good idea with the car being so important to you.

Does this have regular ignition key or push button power start?

It has a regular ignition key. I've also tried the spare key, which didn't work any better. When the car didn't start on a couple of occasions I got out, locked the car, unlocked it, got back in, inserted the key and then it started.

Ah, more information now! If the starter turned over at normal speed after you got back in,then that doesn’t sound like a battery problem and points more to something like an immobiliser fault.

When the fault occurs ,do all the other electrical bits work ok. ?Windows, wipers ,lights etc.

Sound like the earth lead from the battery to car body is intermittently failing.. Probably the connection to the body. Undo. clean up hole in body to bare metal, replace.

Thanks again for your help. I'll be taking it to the garage next week and some of your ideas may save them some time.

Its an old thread, but as time passes I gain knowledge!

A friend had a similar problem with her Focus 1.0 Ecoboost. In their wisdom Ford designed the engine bay so that a coolant pipe is routed directly over the starter motor.

The coolant pipe joint fails and drips coolant into the electrics, car fails to start. Worth a check.
