It appears from the previous descriptions that your 405 alarm is the same as that fitted to my 1993 306.
This has an underbonnet override switch and its key is also marked Texalarm (genuine original Peugeot issue).
After many years of problems with the alarm system, I paid a garage £60 to disable the alarm and immobiliser. However, I've found the alarm will still go off if the battery is disconnected/reconnected and the only way to stop it is with the underbonnet override switch - so don't lose the key!
The plip key still works the locks and deadlocks as before. And indicators flash when locking and unlocking as you describe.
Is your flashing LED next to your radio controls? If so, it is probably the radio "Code Warning Light". This flashes to warn thieves that the radio is protected by a code, and is not part of the car's alarm system. Info correct for a Peugeot model 3030/3040 radio.

Thanks for the info!
It sounds as if your 306 alarm is the same as mine. However the flashing LED is at the top of the 'dashboard' near the middle face vents. This still seems to behave as if the alarm is fully working, which I suppose is a good idea. You could be right about the radio thing, although I've swapped mine for a Sony unit that plays MP3s. Thanks again.

Just to be more precise with my previous reply:
The indicators used to flash as described before I had the alarm/immobiliser disabled. They don't flash now. The headlights only flashed when the alarm was sounding.
I'm not sure what the garage did to disable the alarm/immobiliser. They certainly didn't disconnect the alarm completely because it still goes off if you disconnect/reconnect the battery. If the alarm goes off for this reason, you must turn the underbonnet switch clockwise and then anticlockwise to reset AND then use the plip key remote to lock and unlock the doors once. So you need both keys (and a working battery in the plip key) to reset the system. I think this agrees with Richard Turpin's answer.
I suspect the garage actually only physically disabled the immobiliser, and the alarm is only disabled because it's turned off with the underbonnet switch (switch turned anticlockwise). But because the alarm is/was faulty anyway, I can't test it properly by turning the underbonnet switch the other way.
To be extra sure that the alarm never goes off accidentally, I never lock the car with the plip key (and therefore never set the alarm). I use the key in the lock (hold in the locked position for two seconds) to lock and deadlock the car. I only use the plip key remote when unlocking the car.

Thanks for the additional info. I think after reading this I may leave the alarm switched off. I suppose I'm lucky in that I got 2 plipkeys and 2 alarm switch keys with the car. I guess I'll have to depend on the disklok and flashing LED to put off the scum.

Hi everyone, i'm new to this forum so be nice! I recently suffered a knackered battery in my 96 405td estate. Upon installing the new battery the alarm went mad and no matter what I tried I couldn't stop it. After a LOT of head scratching and realising the bloke that sold me the car was long gone (along with the master key) I tried my own way of silencing it. First the underbonnet switch came of with a pair of cutters and a simple rocker switch installed in its place (the switch was in the off position anyway). whatever i did to this "master" switch made no difference whatsoever to the alarm.
So on to fuse number 14! Ripped that out, reconnected the battery..... no alarm, marvellous! put fuse back in, alarm stayed quiet and works as normal.
I'd suggest using the fuse method as its easy and seems to work, however mine seems very sensitive and false alarmed all the time, so the fuse has stayed out as I live in a very low crime area. Everything else works as normal.
To answer other questions, the headlights flash when the alarm sounds but not when you plip to lock it. one long flash of the indicators to lock and several short flashes to unlock. If the alarm has sounded in your absesce the red led on the dash will flash madly when you get in. Also the little button on the steering column deactivates the ultrasonics, push and hold until the red led flashes lots. You have to do this every time you get out of the car.
Hope this helps a few people out.

I have a few questions, but firstly a BIT OF BACKGROUND...
My car is one of the later models 405 GTX, with Aircon, multi cd, power sunroof and AC on a 1996 plater with 120k genuine on the clock, belting car for the £650 i paid for it almost two yrs ago....and since then I've put 54,000 miles on in two yrs, with NO mechanical faults, just tyres, exhaust, brakes and bulbs...
Now my MOT is due in two weeks time, but i have an issue with the handbrake, I believe so my local grease monkey has told me, a common fault with the drivers side handbrake "rachet", seazing, been told around £120 to replace and fit. no so much an issue as i cant really afford to buy a new car at the min, nor would i want to ....., so that is question 1 where can i get a replacement part from?, without paying for a part from Pug themselves...
As mentioned already, i have owned this stunning car for two yrs, and never found a use for the text alarm key, until changing a bulb this morning and found just above the ns headlight the word text alarm, so my question is this after trying to google the answer.... Q. What is Textalarm, how does it work, is there a alarm sounder, is it benefical to have it on or off, and where can i find a manual for it ( if one exsists).
I also would like to replace the outer key fob for my zapper, and the pushy down bit now shows the inner working of the fob, and ideas where i can get a replacement from, again dont wanna pay peugeot main dealer prices
finally, i have mislaided the locking nut for my alloys again help on finding a replacement would be useful.....
There that about sums it up, now who would like like to enlighten me.
Regards
Mark , Southport UK

Hi Guys, Don't know if this post is still active or not but here is my saga:
I have a 1995 1.6 Peugeot 405 LX petrol. I have a couple of problems with it:
1) The battery on it drains out every 2nd or third week completely. It allows to be jump started 3 or four times and by the third month has to be replaced with a new one. This is my fourth battery and the electrician says there is a leak somewhere but is unable to find the problem.
2) My second problem is pretty much related to the first one. The solution to my battery draining out that I could find myself so far is that I just disconnect the terminals every night and in the morning put them back on which temporarily seems to have fixed the problem but doing this makes my alarm go bonkers and the head lights start flashing. Earlier when this used to happen I had to close the bonnet and the doors and turn the alarm on and off using the key fob repeatedly 5 to 7 times and the indicator lights would blink everytime as I deactivated and reactivated the alarm. Just recently the key fob does not seem to be working although I have changed the batter and a red light turns on it when the button is pressed indicating that it is working but the head lights keep blinking. I have to drive around with the headlights turned on which takes care of it but as soon as I turn the engine off the headlights keep blinking until I disconnect the battery and the whole process is repeated again.
Do I need to reporgram the keyfob and if I do have to then how do I do that?
One more thing is that my steering is very heavy and hard to use. Do I need steering oil in it or is it just the way this model was designed.
Cheers.

Hi,
You don't say whether you car has power steering or not but even if it does on 405s it isn't as light as other cars are. All I can can say is trying steering a 405 with the engine off then you be able to tell if it's assisting. If it has PAS then the fluid probably could do with changing by now. Check the Haynes manual for details.
I'd guess the best thing to do with the alarm saga would be to find the source of the drain. A multimeter and patience are the only suggestion I can make. A basic check for the key outputting an infra red pulse would be to point it at a digital camera and press the button, if you see a white spot then at least something is being outputted. Also check the infra red receiver in the roof to check that it isn't waterlogged from a leaking aerial seal.

Ah ha... thanks Glowplug. I've been trawling the web and posting in forums trying to find a solution to my 1994 405 GRDT problem. Last Friday morning I found I was unable to start it... turning the key to start just extinguishes the battery light (which then comes back on). I've never used the alarm system as the keyfob is in tatters and didn't seem to function when I got the car at auction last year.
I can't find the "deactivate switch" which is supposed to be behind the l/h headlight either... can you describe it ?
But... reading your post here sheds some light on my problem. When i set off for home on Thursday evening water was dripping from the i/r sensor up by the sunroof switches so maybe I'm waterlogged !
Any advice you can offer would be appreciated as the Haynes manual is **** as far as this problem is concerned.
BTW, I don't need the alarm at all so would really like to deactivate it completely.

an update... the i/r sensor is nice and dry. I've found a grey box marked 'TextAlarm' in the steering column console ! but nowhere to stick a key of any sort :-( There's a 'click' from somewhere near the bottom of the steerig column when I try to start - a relay ? Should I still be chasing an immobiliser problem ?
I can start by running a wire from the battery +ve to the starter motor's small terminal.
TIA
Mike
