2006 Mondeo 2.0 HDI Diesel, 30,000 miles - 2006 Mondeo 2.0 HDI "pulling"/"jerking" - crE

Hi

I recently bought this car, was impressed with the low mileage and ir ran smoothly on the test drive, it also has a full service history and is generally immaculate. MOT was April 2016.

All had been fine until I got onto a motorway, at 70mph in 5th gear. I was maintaining this speed with just my foot pressed lightly on the accelerator.

However, I noticed the occasional "jerk" or "tug", almost as if the car wasn't putting quite enough fuel into the engine. This disappeared as soon as I put my foot down a little and everything was normal. But it would reproduce itself when coasting at around 70mph in fifth gear. Revs over 1500.

I've noticed this at slower speeds in 4th, but far less.

Apart from this the car drives beautifully.

I popped into the local garage and he said it could be faulty fuel injectors (he said up to £1000 to fix!) or a sensor (A few hundred pounds to fix).

Am I being taken for a ride or does this sound genuine? Is there anything else that this could be?

Thanks for reading

Injectors on these are usually good for 80-100k miles,so not convinced they are your problem.I would start at the basics and replace the fuel filter .These regularly get overlooked as replacing it can cause difficulty in bleeding the fuel system of air. There is no in-tank lift pump on these.

Low mileage on diesels is not a good thing, they thrive on high mileage, lower mileage can cause problems.

Agree about starting with fuel filter, a code read would also be worthwhile.

Blocked up EGR valve and inlet manifold . Low mileage.

Thanks for all the advice!

I did buy some additives from the garage (£20) and added them on Friday, I also added half a tub of redex on Monday and then filled up with the BP Ultimate Diesel. I haven't noticed the jerking today and the latter half of yesterday, but, I haven't been on the motorway since.

Would these additives realistically fix an issue like a blocked EGR valve, inlet manifold or fuel filter?

Realistically "No fix", but may make it run better for a while.

I think I need to find a reputable Diesel specialist in my area. I feel I don't want to take it to my local generic garage - they just tend to do MOTs and the odd repair.

Would anyone have any tips on finding a reliable dealer who knows what they're doing?

Well I've booked my car in for a service at the end of the month at a reputable family dealer I found. After looking at the service book the last one was at 27,000 miles exactly 2 years ago. The car has only done 3,500 miles since then! It really wasn't used much at all.. perhaps not so great for a diesel?
