Thinking of buying a 2008 Mitisubishi Colt CZ1.

How are these for spare parts?

When searching the Back Room messages, I found an old posting from someone who needed a wheel bearing. There wasn't a single one in the country, it had to be ordered in.

Is this a common issue with Mitsubishi? I notice they don't have as many dealers as other far East manufacturers such as Toyota, Honda, Suzuki, Hyundai etc.

Can't speak for them today but I used to sell for a large Mitsubishi dealer in the 90's and although some parts were pricy compared to rivals, there was no issue with availability.

Quality was outstanding back then too with Colts regularly coming back in from private driving schools with the guts of 200k on the clock and still running fine.

But Mitsubishi is technically insolvent (they were loss making in the 90's too) and has I believe just been bought by Renault which will no doubt see them turned into another Nissan.. essentially just churning out Renault's with different badges.

It's quite possible their recent money issues may have resulted in stock issues with some parts.

Nissan have bought 34% of Mitsubishi.

Renault don't own Nissan - the two companies have a strategic partnership with a cross shareholding.

Renault own a 43.4% controlling share of Nissan and Nissan have a non-voting 15% share in Renault so in commercial terms they do control the firm. As for Mitsubishi they again are acquiring a controlling share which means they will dictate future product development. Sadly though the days of bombproof Mitsubishi products was coming to an end via a lack of funding anyway so whether it'll be a negative compared to where they stand today is questionable. Take the current Mirage compared to the Colt back in the 80's/90's which was an excellent high quality product that bares little resemblance to the cheap third world trash the Mirage is.

The same applies to the vast majority of car makers IMHO.

80/90s designs, made up to about 2005 latest depending on manufacturer are the sweetest years.

Exactly the same in lorry world, more electronic rubbish now than you can shake a stick at, except for Hino (Toyota) who stubbornly refuse even now to fix what wasn't broken in the first place, quite why they haven't made it big time in europe in heavy lorries is a puzzle...respected in tipper world especially for being rugged and durable yet light and simple.

Can't comment regarding the trucks but I disagree regards cars. Disregarding all the troublesome environmental nonsense like the DPF that has been enforced on makers most cars are much better made now than they were in the 80's/90's. Ford Escort v Focus, Astra v current model, Corsa v Nova, Fiat UNO v 500. Mitsubishi went the other way sadly.

Time will tell if cars made now are still doing stirling service in 15 to 20 years time, as are so many of the cars from the years i prefer.

How many equipped with a DPF or EPB will still be in service, those saddled with both i suggest you will be able to count on one hand.

Depends what you want like and expect from cars, whilst most people it would appear like new cars for their own reasons, some of us do not for a variety of other reasons.

This Japanese car parts supply shortage some years ago that you refer to. Was it around five years ago?

Remember the Fukushima nuclear reactor issue after the 2011 Earthquake? Could it have been caused by that massive disaster? Not going to be an issue today is it.

I recall it affected Nissan parts significantly.

Renault may have a controlling interest, but still don't actually own Nissan.

Similar to Toyota and Daihatsu - Toyota held a 51.2% controlling interest in Daihatsu since 1999, and decided to purchase the remainder earlier this year, making Daihatsu a wholly owned subsidiary of Toyota.

That's how you take control of a firm. You buy a controlling share. You don't need to buy every share in existence to take over, Renault therefore own the controlling share of Nissan and now Mitsubishi. Hardly any takeovers of firms involve 100% of the stock.

Getting back on topic.

Would getting parts for an 08 Colt CZ1 be more difficult and expensive than an equivalent Toyota Yaris, for example?

Yes. The Yaris was sold in vastly higher numbers and thus parts availability is better plus there is a much larger variety of aftermarket suppliers too due to that volume. Availablity of used parts from scrap yards is much higher also. To be honest it's a better made wee car too. Just watch later chain driven cars for rattling chains and neglected servicing.

Have you tried asking the relative parts desks for comparisons of possible genuine parts that might be needed.

There won't be any trouble with service or friction consumables and to a lesser extent suspension and drive line *parts due to quality aftermarket, but my one foray into Mitsi ownership found that aftermarket parts such as headlights (RHD) there were none available unless you happened to have a proper Mitsi 4x4 such as L200, genuine headlamps for Outlander 1 (including built in lower motors) £350 a side which is probably cheap now compared to xenon and LED lamps, the prices of which will shock many in due course.

Mitsi genuine parts arn't cheap by any means, but the cars are reliable enough that few OE parts should be needed, dealers the most miserable i ever delivered new cars to but don't ask me why.

*why does the swear filter not like drive line in one word?

Can back this up. Our management and staff were pretty miserable in the latter years before they gave up the franchise. The firm has squeezed and squeezed margins to the point where you were making next to nothing on new Mitsubishi's unless you sold loads of options and loaded the finance. Margin on a basic Colt 3dr in the late 90's was only £300 and everyone wanted money off! The basic Proton Persona Compact 1.3 GLi had a margin of £270! Yet you had to spend a fortune to meet manufacturer standards regards facilities. The only reason they kept it as long was that it was a good source of well maintained used stock on which you could turn a profit. Their best days were the 80's and early 90's.

"Why does the swear filter not like drive line in one word?"

Sorry - you have to think of the first six letters all together! You may remember we had a bumptious young man called Jamie who used to post on here, who if he disagreed with someone would either call them m o r o n s or say they were writing d r i v e l - or both. So I put them into the swear filter to try to deter him.

I'm afraid this is one more example of the mindlessness of software. If you were to type the name of a football club managed by Mr Wenger, it would look even worse!
