Car Insurance - Dwight Van Driver

Am I going doolally?

3 years ago I transferred from Police Mutual Car Insurance (ex plods note this is expensive Insurance despite their baloney cheap) to a company with a scouse accent (need I say more) that gave me a good quote.

Last year on renewal it only went up by £8.

This year no change in cover up by 37 quid. Bit of telephone batering and they would only give me a 17 notes reduction.

Went on line to their site and after giving my life history and inside leg measurement lo and behold same cover £41 cheaper than their renewal quote and cheaper than last years premium. On line payment accepted faster than you can say Jack Rabbit.

Have I struck gold or will there be a rebuttal letter in the post.

I had cover with the same company for car and home insurance: both renewals went up by a substantial percentage.

Checking the 'Meerkats' site, this very same company's price for identical cover was less than previous years premium, so took out cover from that site with them (with bonus of a Meerkat toy for grandchildren!)

Loyalty seems to be taken as mindless acceptance, presumably works in many cases.

Have been with Cornmarket for a few years now for my two cars, this year the renewals were cheaper than i could find online...for those interested they specialise in HGV/PSV/IAM drivers.

SWMBO is with SAGA, who for the second time running came in so reasonably priced that it wasn't worth shopping about.

Maybe its just us or coincidence, but i did wonder if they've finally twigged about keeping customers, we try never to claim for anything at all , incl windscreens.

Perfectly normal my friend. I've reinsured with Aviva for the last 5 years, but never actually renew - always buy a new policy each year via topcashback, the premium is always cheaper as a new policy and 60 quids cash back to boot!

Proof (if it were needed) that loyalty does not pay. Better to be a new customer every year even if with th esame company taking the same product.

As GB has said, Cornmarket (IAM for me) seem to be honest, and don't hike up the premiums each year. They're also great to deal with on the phone.

Other insurance companies seem to view 'customer loyalty' as 'customer stupidity'.

Oh yes they do!

A couple of my IAM Surety renewal quotes have been big increases - but their price-match policy works well - even with Cornmarket/IAM you should never just pay the renewal price.

Not car insurance but did contents insurance last night...renewal price was £98. Gocompare price was £61 with the same company. Used Quicdo and got £26 so will end up paying £35 instead of £98...certainly worth a few minutes on the comparison sites...I do wish companies would actually reward loyalty instead of forcing you to spend time at renewal time looking round and then end up with the same company!

How do you manage this when t&c's seem to specifically prohibit this?

...Had the same 'conversation' with my current Home Insurance provider last night.

Their renewal letter had indicated a 28% increase for the next 12-months, with identical cover/no change in any circumstances!

I'd already been onto the same company's website to obtain a quote as a 'new customer' and had been offered improved cover (an increased Contents cover sum & NCD protection) for just an additional £9.00 over last year's price!!

When matey asked why I wasn't renewing the existing policy I told him I was simply 'playing the annual game' and would be buying through a different portal. He immediately assumed that that was a comparison site and declared that policies appearing on those sites are often (usually) discounted by 20-25% for Year 1 to reel you in!!!

So, yes, you're foolish if you don't shop around annually – for all/any kind of insurance, but like the comment above, I wish we didn't have to and would sometimes prefer to establish a bit of continuity/loyalty, but at a sensible price increase and not just something a computer algorithm has determined...

Prompted by this thread, last night I obtained a quote for multicar onsirance from Aviva. My insurance is due tomorrow on one car and October on the other. It came back at £222 for the first - slightly higher than direct line, and £88 for the second. The second would run from October for 280 days so that renwal is together next year. The website clearly also said this was equivalent to £114 annual premium.

Today I phoned up to take them up on this, quoting the reference no. but the girl insisted the £114 was for the 280days and didnt know anything about the £88!

After much explanation and wasting of time I didnt get anywhere, Avivas quote retreival system conveniently doesnt recall 2nd car details, and just gives renewal price of the 1st vehicle and a telephone no to proceed further, no online option.

Its a scam in my opinion.
