Audi A3 1.9 TDI - 2006 - Obtaining a spare remote key - Galaxy

A friend of mine has just purchased an Audi A3 (56 plate) but, unfortunately, it's only been supplied with one remote key (the only key!) He would obviously like to obtain a spare.

I know the key contains an immobiliser chip so is it just a matter of buying another key on Ebay (or similar) and using the existing key to program the new one, or is this a main dealer or specialist locksmith job?

I also know the new key would need to be cut to suit the door and ignition locks, but this appears to be a relatively minor problem. If he just bought a blank key and had it cut, without doing anything else, would this be adequate to just open the doors only? It obviously wouldn't start the car without programming, I know.

Does anyone happen to know, please?

Many thanks.

There are two ways to do this .The correct way is to order a genuine key from Audi ,which will come cut and partially coded. Then get Audi or a recognised locksmith to code it to the car. This is done on line.Alternatively ,buy a copy key from the bay,get someone to try and code it to the car with inferior equipment and hope the car runs afterwards.Do you feel lucky?A cheaply way out is to get a basic key cut to open the door, but obviously will not start the car.You may find a basic key will not turn off the alarm system when unlocking the doors.

The locksmith in my home town can clone VAG key transponder chips as long as you have a key from which the code can be obtained, which in this case you do, and you provide proof of ownership. I would imagine other locksmiths can do this.

Most locksmiths can cut keys-some locksmiths can code keys.
