Road Tolls for the A12 - puntoo
Following on from the Successful implementation of the Congestion Charge Tax, both Local papers are this week reporting that tolls should be introduced on the A12 to ease congestion.

I wonder if any major roads within the uk have decided, or are considering tolls ?

Maybe the money raised could be used to put thick layers of cotton wool all around the Copdock Interchange??? I'm always hearing of accidents there.

I think a 'reverse toll' would be more appropriate for the A12 - pay me a fiver to drive on it!

"pay me a fiver to drive on it!"

Absolutely.

I dare say there may be attempts to toll some roads in the UK, but we are a small island and it would result in putting traffic back on to the smaller routes that the main roads were built to relieve!

On the continent the premium for time saving is worth it, because journeys are over longer distances with often no direct alternatives. That does not really apply in too many places here, where most motorways and bypasses merely replicate routes that already exist in single carriageway form.

The Goverment seems to be going with recommendations in the various "multi-modal" studies which have been going on. The first ones recommended the widening of the M6 etc.

The only one in the South East which recommended road tolls was the one for the M25.

The one for the A12 recommended widening it to 3 lanes to Colchester, a new A12/M25 interchange and dualling the A120 all the way to Harwich. I also think it recommended dualling the A120 from Braintree to Colchester. The Government should give their response later in the year.
