Hyundai Santa Fe petrol - choosing 4 new chunky tyres - bananastand

How do lads, been a while since I rapped at ya. Hyundai Santa Fe needs four 225 70 16 tyres. Local back street tyre man, with whom I'm quite friendly, said go and choose something on mytyres.

He had a look and watching over his shoulder I thought I saw prices in the 40 - 50 ££ range. Looking at home they averaged at £70 -80

have I gone partly daft or would he have had a "trade" account with them?

Also, I remember have a range rover about 12 years ago, and the tyres had huge chunky treads on them, and after a year's use, they didn't seem to have worn at all. The ones I have now have worn right down after 18 months/25000 miles.

Hi Bananastand.

You probably had AT tyres on the RR and depending on make these come with around 12mm of tread new, normal HT type tyres come with the standard 8mm, makes a big difference to life but these deep chunky treads tend to wallow on the road a bit.

Tyreleader is worth a look, i had a quick poke nose there and £60/90 is the going rate for something worth buying.

I have Hankook RF10 AT's on my old Landcruiser, they came with 12/13mm tread new, they are ok for my use but i wouldn't exactly call them a road based tyre, the tyre that gets recommended regularly on 4x4 forums for all round use is the BF Goodrich All Terrain, i had those on my previous Landcruiser and they too didn't wear.

BFG's at the pricier end but users generally see around 60k miles out of a set.

Note don't be surprised whatever you buy if you think for a while that you've dropped a clanger, likely to take a good 1000 miles to scrub in before they start to grip properly.

Thanks our Gordon. Going back to mytyres they do indeed have special trade prices and from memory they ar at least a third cheaper, maybe more. I think I'll choose the tyre in me mate's office again with me looking at the screen - I'll use a bit of emotional blackmail to keep his mark up sensible.

And before anyone says anything, yes I know he's entitled to make a living!!! Ha ha.

and I'm definitely going for AT, I don't care how they handle, I care about them lasting twice as long

Take a look at Cooper Discoverer a/t. I have these on my Freelander2. There is 10mm of tread when new, and after 20,000 miles, I have 7mm on the right front and 6mm on the left. I am well pleased with that, and have put a pair on the rear now, to replace the Goodyears. Oh yes, and they look knobbly enough for most people.
