BMW 3 Series & X3 - BMW 2.0D Timing Chain Problems from what year? - Buzzy Beans

I am thinking about buying a new set of wheels which when purchased will have to last us for a very long period of time............. pensioners you know!!!

On my shortest of short lists is the 2.0D BMW X3 but I have heard so many tales of utter woe about the engines!

I have been advised to look out only for a vehicle of up to 2007 vintage as after that date they did something to the engine which was 'bonkers' and caused major problems with reliability?

Apparently they swapped the position of the timing chain from the (sensible) front of the engine to a sprocket mounted at the back of the engine on the flywheel and this caused massive reliability problems.

Does anyone with any factual knowledge know what to look out for with regards to these models and their engines?

Many thanks

BB

I had a 2008 1 series with the 2 litre diesel. Had no problems whatsoever in 5 1/2 years.

Buying a 9 year old car of any brand is a lottery.

Just buy the best you can find with the best service history.

Hi

Last August I was in the same predicament looking for a 3-series

I opted for a E90 2005 320d SE auto which has the old M47TU2D20 engine 163 bhp (chain at front of engine) with traditional 6 speed torque convertor auto box, I found an almost immaculate one with 63'000 miles with a good enough service history, lemon leather, interior wood trim in the best colour black (my choice anyway)

The tax is a bit steep at £225 per year, the fuel economy is very good as it generally averages 45 mpg but I only run it on the good stuff, shell v power nitro

I had to go down the private sale route to find a good one and it wasn't cheap, it had a few problems that I fixed myself but I always have serviced & repaired my own cars

But I opted for this model as it has no dpf (exhaust points down), egr is easily accessible is it needs cleaning or changing, also I have no dmf or clutch, But did have the gearbox serviced by a specialist as it's not diy (not cheap)

My hope is I can get a long life out of this car as it is very well built and it is a pleasure to drive, other than the reg you wouldn't think it was 10 years old

That is a brilliant reply, thanks so very much for taking your time to do so.

Do you happen to know when the M47TU2D20 engine with the timing chain at the front of the engine stopped being produced by BMW in their cars?

If you would happen to know, is it the same engine in the 3 series cars as in the X3?

I have just read this bit of horror information on another forum about the swirl flaps fitted to the M47TU2D20 engines....

www.bmwforums.info/general-guides-and-how-to-s/993...l

Has anyone on here experienced any such problems?

We had the offending swirl flaps removed by PMG (i think thats the correct name) at Chelmsford on two 320d's fitted with that engine, circa £220 IIRC correctly for removal, custom made blanking plates and fitting.

The earlier compact was traded for a coupe when some rather ominous sounds started to be heard in the top end, at around 120k only and serviced very well since bought at 45k when the turbo immediately failed as they tend to have a habit of.

The rare 3.0d X3 is a rather nice drive should you happen to spot one.

Good servicing at sensible mileages is IMO the thing to look for on a modern Diesel, missing or dubious services walk away.

However if its of any interest, my son bought a 325i 3 series estate probably 6 or 7 months ago now, despite a 3 litre very sweet petrol engine its proving surprisingly economical considering he isn't one for hanging about.

I mention this because IMHO modern Diesels are not the really long term trouble free and durable bet that their predecessors once were in many cases.

BMW 1 series Timing Chain and Engine Wiring Harness and Throttle problems. - JimBeam

This discussion has conflated into addressing 1 and 3 series models but in my case concerns a petrol 116i - 2007 model bought from a BMW dealer three years ago with 17,000 genuine miles showing. It was never economical and bated on acceleration when cold but otherwise is an exceptional car, if a little slow. A year last November issues began at around 25,000 miles when it began going into limp mode and several mystifying diagnostics resulted in a new throttle body, which did not cure the problem. The car still ran normally but prompted worries about cooling system sensors, blocked waterways, faulty ECU etc. Coincidentally or otherwise, my daughter was learning to drive at the time and practiced half a dozen emergency stops at around 30mph. The car threw its timing chain over three sprocket teeth and would not start. An excellent local garage, Simon Green of Horsforth cautioned this to be a common problem with all BMWs including 6 series models and that the manufacturer would not pay for it. His bill would have been £900+ The manufacturer did pay, on condition I took it to Stratstone Harrogate. I did not have a BMW warranty and Warranty Wise declined to cover the cost. The limp mode issues continued with over 120 annoying and at times frightening instances in the past year. More mystifying diagnostics proved that the throttle body repair had been unnecessary and finally BMW agreed to replace the Engine Wiring Harness free of charge, covering an estimated cost to me of £800. They put the limp mode issue down to poor crimping on the connections at the throttle and again their engineer at JCT 600 stated that this was a common fault on the 1 series. My research threw up the reality that this is a common fault across the range of models. Patience and the threat of consumer legal action to their Quality Assurance dept covered the cost of reapirs that could well have exceeded £2,000. BMW's reputation is currently better than their cars. On balance I am extremely disappointed, especially to find in my researches that these cars have plastic thermostat elbows and water pumps which disintgrate over time and block up waterways. Heat cycling also cracks header tanks. I guess best advice would be, if you can't extend to a model with a manufacturers warranty consider buying a buss pass. Not good.

Hi

It seems to have been used in the E90 & E91 between 2005 and maybe up to 2008 according to en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_3_Series_(E90)

But I did think in September 2007 when they gave it a facelift they then changed the engine to the N47 177 bhp engine with the rear chain

The M47 engine has a couple tell tale signs, the rear exhaust tailpipe point downwards on this, on the N47 it points outwards, Also on the M47 engine if you take the filler cap off you can see the chain

Also the M47 engine is 163 bhp, the N47 is 177 bhp

The E83 X3 is listed as having it fitted around the same time but I haven't done much checking into it (dpf fitted?)

Hope this helps

I am not sure why you say bonkers, it simply the suppliers did replace machine tool often enough and caused the timing chain to be poor qualility. So most people would be ok , just some unluck people who got chain build at the end of a run.

These chain found there way into many german cars not just BMW and i think it 2007-2008. I had a 2007 did 150,000 miles no issues, so a lucky one.

2007 would not be the best year, a later then 2008 or 2005-2006 should be ok. Its still worth ensuring there is no chain rattle/noise and get the chain inspected before purchase. This is not so easy as the chain is at the rear of the engine and it hard to tell if it stretched or damaged.

As slkfanboy says BMW have made millions of 2 litre turbo diesels in their various forms and its inevitable that some have had issues.

But you never hear of the huge majority that never give a problem, the only owners that moan are the unlucky ones or those that have a poorly maintained and/or a very high mileage car, issues are pretty inevitable then.

Some jump on the bandwagon and moan because they hate BMW's (or German cars in general) never having owned one.

So buy the best you can afford and make sure its got a 100% service record and no rattles.

Then enjoy.
