I have a perception that not many dealers provide a viewing area of the service bay where you can watch your own car being serviced.

I would like to know which do as I would even travel to a different area to use one with this facility. (Have a day out, even take the OH).

I suspect there is a strong reluctance to provide this especially from the engineers.

I know of a VW dealer who provides a DVD of the car service, includes viewing the engineer underneath checking out for any rust even and verbally reporting what he's actually doing and seeing. I'm very impressed with this type and care of customer 'focused' service.

Do other car dealers use video like this?
Is everyone impressed with their servicing?

Nailit.

Alot of dealerships probably don't want to allow you to see what they are doing as many don't change brake fluid or pollen filters even though they have charged you for it. Sharp eyed customers might notice their sloppy practices.

I'm not aware of any dealers who video the whole service. It sounds a bit impractical.

I am however, impressed by the local Mercedes dealer I use, who email me an attachment of the "visual health check", which is a 3 to 4 minute film of the technician going around underneath the car showing the condition of pads and discs, tyres, exhaust, suspension and steering components etc.

Mind you, for £120 per hour, or whatever it is........

They also have large windows from the coffee area into the workshop.

If you don't trust a garage to perform a service properly, change the garage.

I also use an excellent independent Mercedes specialist, who talks you through exactly what has been done, showing you the parts he has replaced and why, before telling you what should be done at or before the next service. £50 per hour.

Local Hyundai dealer has a viewing window from the comfortable waiting area. Also a free coffeee machine, WiFi and newspapers/Autoexpress magazines.

Prices pretty reasonable too.

There used to be an independent garage in Rayleigh, Essex, who provided a video recording of all the work they carried out. I've got a video of them changing the cambelt on my Mondeo somewhere, it's on a VHS cassette! That's how long ago it was. I've no idea whether they still offer this service.

Mind you, you don't see anything in great detail as it's a single fixed time-lapse camera.

I think they used to have a webcam there, too. But, once again I've no idea whether they still have that because I haven't been back there for years!

Edit.....................I've just had a look at their website.

They say they have a webcam and also give customers a video of all work they carry out. However, when you click on the webcam it says it's no longer available, so I don't know about the individual videos.

On my last service my local Kia dealer did that. However, they only show this to customers if customers disputes something or specifically ask for this.

Isn't it the case that any garage offering MOT has to provide a viewing area?

Only of the MoT testing bay.

Many workshops have one bay for MoT's and other bays for servicing/repairs.

Fair point. Kwik-Fits seem to have a good view over the whole service area. Not sure whether the OP's SO would see it as a day out, mind. Free hot beverages, though.

Local Vx dealer (P*****on) does the same thing, even as part of their fixed price Masterfit services. I rate it highly and it removes a lot of doubt. However you still have to have an understanding of what is being shown to you particularly when faults are identified.

My sons Astra recently failed its 2nd MOT on a broken rear spring, it was there on the video to see along with a quote to replace both sides. Which incidently was only £30 more than my trusted independent quoted using non OEM parts.
