Audi A4 2.0 TDIe SE Technik 136 4dr - Audi A4 Clutch Query - i_rhino

My car, which is an Audi A4 2.0 TDi Se Technik 136 4dr, has just had its MOT. Everything was fine except that the tester stated that the clutch was showing signs of wear. The car was registered in July 2011 and has done around 42k miles.

I was surprised to say the least that an Audi that has only done just over 40k miles would be showing signs of wear. The garage stated that this was normal but i was wondering whether this is correct or whether there is an ongoing issue that could cause this that they aren't telling me about.

FYI - I purchased the car with 32k miles on and have driven it normally but clearly i don't know who had it before or how they drove it.

Would be grateful for your thoughts.

Nothing you can do about it. Keep on driving until the clutch / DMF eventually goes, at which point you'll have to get it replaced.

Which could happen in 1,000 miles, or 100,000 miles, depending on how you drive.

Is any aspect of clutch an MoT item?

I'd expect a clutch that's done 40k in four years to be showing some wear. Not same thing as saying it's nearly worn out though.

I have a 406 estate with the original clutch at 246,000 miles, its mainly down to the way its been driven but there does seem to be a tendency for modern clutches not to last as long.

The problem is not with the clutches, as much as it is with the DMFs. Modern diesels have so much torque that the DMF is almost a sacrificial part to save the gearbox from being wrecked in low gears. A lot of modern diesels actually limit the power/torque in first and second gears to lessen the 'torque shock'.

As to an MOT tester noticing the problem, I can only surmise it was spotted when the car was undergoing the brake test.

One could only asume that he noted a high bite which I have a feeling is a know issue with some VWs/Audis. This gives the impression that clutch is in a worst state than it really is, so basically for now no action required.
