It's years since I went and looked around one, but still remember how browsing seemed to be discouraged and I was made to feel uncomfortable.

I can think of many other type of "shop" I'd be happy to spend time looking around without feeling like I was a nuisance for not buying anything, but not a car showroom.

Am I being unfair and are they now more welcoming? If not I think the trade is missing out on the extra business which could come from people who thought they were only going to "have a look".

While looking round Mr Toyota's Emporium last month with my wife. Whilst inside a shiny clean new vee-hickle, she proceeds to whip out a boiled sweet and unwrap it.

Frankly I was horrified. Nothing was said by the sales people but they noticed.....oh we did buy one though.

My 2p is look with your eyes not your hands. Leave no trace of your having been there. If your serious then is the time to sit, prod, poke, operate the twiddly bits etc.

While having wife's Yaris aircon regassed at the Toyota dealer and while my i30 was serviced at the Hyundai shop I had a good look at the various new models in the showrooms, checking for spare wheels etc, hvaing a sit in; in each case the sales guys just said "feel free to have a look, glad to answer any questions" and left us to it.

I'm sure some dealers/salesmen are quite different in their approach.

i think it totally depends on the brand that you are visiting as well as the individual saleman/women.

its probably as showrooms are quiet and they feel pressured to hit targets

Admitedly it was 10 years ago, but I found my (at the time) local Honda dealership to be really good - helpful, but not pushy. In one afternoon of browsing, I managed to get two hour-ling test drives in and help from the salesman to help me put some of my holiday luggage and gold stuff in their showroom cars' boots (Jazz mk1 and 2005 Civic 3dr) to see if it fitted, plus poking around inside the cars, followed by a nice sit down, cup of tea and their best price on both the models (new) I was considering. A very relaxing, pleasant experience with no pressure.

He asked if it was ok to phone me a week or so later to see if had made my mind up, which he did and politely accepted I had gone for another make/car (my Mazda3 - I'd been extremely lucky to get a 30% off deal by going to Motorpoint [sadly very few available back then on Hondas]).

The Mazda dealer (not the one I use now) was ok, but not very enthusiastic. If the great Mazda3 deal hadn't been available (effectively I got more car for a Grand less than the Jazz and £4k less than the Civic), I would've gone for the Jazz (the Civic [1.6 Sport], nice as it was, was less comfortable to drive due to it not having a foot rest [a must have for me], but was expensive [£14k+] for the equivalent of the Mazda with a far smaller boot). I really liked the 'Honda experience' - a shame they don't have anything worth buying at the moment in their current line-up.

Most places that wish to attract the public seem to find a good way is to provide a tearoom. It may add to the profits even if it doesn't actually sell more cars.

The modern way is to add a costa coffee to somewhere and charge a premikum for machined coffee!

No thanks, only want a cup of coffee not buying shares in the place.:-)

Greggs for me, bacon and sausage roll lashings of hp sauce and a large latte (yum) for £2.50 before 11am, £3 at a motorway services, usually moto.

When I'm browsing - and my research typically starts 12 months or more before purchase - I'll explain what I'm doing to the sales staff, and encourage them to abandon me for a more likely customer if one shows up. That way everyone knows what's going on and no-one's time is wasted. If I have questions to ask, I'll wait until the eager purchaser has left.

Greggs for me

Whetherspoons for me. Breakfast deal (coffee and 2 slices of toast, butter and jam) £1.80. Then you can drink as much coffee as you can for FREE until 2.00 pm.

Brilliant + a load of characters to entertain you especially once they have tried all the special brews.

Just avoid Friday mornings, its mums on benefit time.

i vote for wethersppons brekkies too, not noticed to many "yummie mummies" here in Colchester, but got a special order (not bad for a late breakfast the other week.. )8oz sirloin steak chips and peas for £3.99 at 11.15am.

we also have 2 free brekkies pending as not happy with the steak i had one evening. (we like the 2 steaks and bottle of wine offer, not on the menu, you have to ask for it but damn good value on a tuesday PM.)

also a lot better than most greasy spoons nowadays.

the free refills do the trick too for the coffee.

Niece came from canada last year and went home a bit heavier after sampling wetherspoons and greggs, but i make a point of stopping at leigh delamere on the m4 either way for the greggs coffee and bacon/sausage roll.

wheres that food now.....

not noticed to many "yummie mummies"

I can 100% garantee that some of the "yummie mummies" are less than yummie. Way too many breakfasts and other meals for that matter.

Oh.. Those.. swmbo can generally quote me the BMI at a glance,

However, I can promise you that a certain french car dealer in carmarthen has a lovely kind and helpful customer service receptionist, and on top of that she is really really nice, Always smiling and helpful.

No. I'm not dreaming.
