Range Rover Vogue 2005 TDV6 - Whining from my turbo - cooke

Hi There.

This is new to me, just bought a Range Rover Vogue TDV6 2005.

Lovely car inside and out, however I seem to have a whining noise coming from what looks like the turbo?

It start at around 2000rpm, and also once i release of the power.

You can also hear it slightly whilst driving, a little like a police siren.

Help!!!!

Turbos do make noises but its impossible to say from your description is its making the right noises.

Take it to a decent garage and let them tell you.

Just to say, if this is a Range Rover (rather than a RR Sport), then it is either an inline-TD6, or a TDV8. The TDV6 was only put into the RR Sport.

And yes, the turbos on them can be a bit 'whooshy' for want of a better word. So it could be normal, or it could be something starting to fail. A decent LR indy garage should be able to help you.

It is a 2005 model TD6, does it cause damage to the car if the turbo is falling?

Its more of a whistle than a whoosh, it doesnt sound bad. Actually being a petrol head i quite like it.

My concern is am i causing damage to my car if it is a failing turbo?

Yes. If it fails it could cause serious / terminal damage to the engine. I know someone who that happened to a few years ago. The final bill was in the region of £4k.

Got a few grand spare lying around for a new engine ?

It could be a leak on the pipe from the turbo to the intercooler, check that first. Don't know about the Range Rover specifically but failed turbo's don't generally cause engine damage ules they start to draw in copious ammounts of oil through a failed seal/bearing and the engine runs away but this very rarely happens.

If it drives OK the chances are that its allright but if you are worried take it along to a diesel specialist.

That's exactly what happened to the friend who had the problem. The turbo bearings seized, causing the seal to fail, oil was drawn into the engine, and it had a complete runaway on the limiter until it blew. He'd noticed a few weeks before that the turbo seemed a bit noisy, and was intending getting it looked at at the next service.

It happened to him whilesitting on the M6, with his wife and 2 kids in the car. Fortunately he had the presence of mind to knock it into neutral.
