Audi A5 Cabriolet 2011 - Failed Oil Consumption Test - Advice - HJB1000

Hi. I need advice. Over the last 3 months I have noticed the use of oil in my car getting progresively worse. To the point where I now use almost a litre of oil every 300 miles. When I first noticed I contacted my local Audi Garage who informed me 'they use a lot of oil'. I recently took the car in for an 'oil consumption test'. It failed. They have now sent off to Audi to see if they will repair. They said it would take some time as there are 'quite a few claims'. My concern is that my car has 50,000mls on the clock. I have had two services with Audi themselves and 2 with my local garage (I am very confident with my local garage he has serviced both my wife's and my son's car for many years). I have detailed the work he undertook at the service and he used the correct oil (and detailed on my receipt). I am concerned that all of the artcles I have read state that they undertake a good will repair to those that have a 100% Audi service history. I am afraid they will come back to me and state that because I haven't had a full service history with themselves that I will not be able to receive such support. My argument is that this is a fault of the car, not the service, as it is occurring, no matter who services the car. Is there anyone who can advise as to what I should say, or who has had experience of this happening who does not have a full service history? Your help would be gratefuly appreciated. Thanks in anticipation

I would not be surprised if Audi declined the claim since you have serviced at an indy. You have shown no faith in them so why should they look after you now that there is an issue. With regards to the invoice the garage could write anything on there, it proves nothing, many brands require you to produce receipts for the actual parts/lubricants.

You could have saved a few pounds yet end up spending over £1000 getting the engine sorted.

Having a good relationship with the dealer network is a valuable tool.

Regardless of where it has been serviced I would not be expecting to get 100% of the repair costs on a 4+ year old vehicle. If you wanted that you should have extended the warranty.

Interesting quote:

"Qualification criteria are applied in each individual case to confirm that the vehicle has been serviced in accordance with the owner’s handbook by an Audi Centre or other professional workshop which follows the Audi Service quality standards."

How do they prove that a professional workshop has followed Audi's quality standards.

Will be very interested to hear.

Yes thanks for this. This was the reason for asking advice. I had heard that there was a recognised fault so thought that the issue is not with the quality of servicing whic seems to be the red herring in all of this but the actual car itself. I am surprised that with what has happened in the USA and now in the UK they haven't actually managed to initiate a recall for tests. The web is full of examples of this car at this age, having the same issue. And this was backed up by my dealer saying tent are swamped with claims.

Is it the 2.0 TFSI engine? Quite a shocker this. In theory there should be no problem with an Indy servicing your car with genuine parts. Unfortunately, their lawyers are bigger and stronger than yours, so you'll never win. I'd get shut and stay away from German cars as it's all bad news at the moment. My 210,000 mile 1.8 petrol Toyota uses half a litre every 10,000 miles. Doesn't have the kudos of a premium German brand but the lack of bother makes up for it.

HJB : your reply to skidpan's post was rather rude. Not really required.

Just because someone says something you don't agree with, doesn't mean they are wrong. The simple fact is that a lot of manufacturers WILL use that sort of reasoning to invalidate any 'goodwill' that might otherwise have been forthcoming.

We get plenty of people on here who post about problems, and then bite the head off anyone who replies and doesn't agree with their pre-conceived ideas about how it will all pan out. Basically, they'd come on here for validation of their genius, and anyone who points out any flaws in that plan is viewed as an idiot, butting in, being 'unhelpful', etc.

As it is, I tend to agree with skidpan. Yes, there is a known problem with these engines, and a lot of them use a lot of oil. However, by skimping on the servicing costs you have given them an open door to refusing/restricting any goodwill. If I was you, I'd be prepared for them to make a small-ish offer as to the percentage of costs to fix, and also getting some prices off independent engine rebuilders to get the work done.

So is that 'an opinion' (which you don't want), or 'advice' (which you do want) ? Only you can decide ...
