EXORBITANTLY HIGH CHARGES BY AA PATROL MAN.

Hi Brethren,

I have full membership of AA Breakdown. So, I called the AA man to check fault with engine of Renault Meganne.

He found that one of the four ignition coils is gone. He asked me if I have one that he can change it for me. I said I do not have one. Then, he said he can sell one to me. He had one and I agreed to buy from him.

So, he supplied the Ignition coil and fitted it. He charged me £57.50. I told him that it is too expensive than I bought one last time. He told me that am the price his computer says.

So, I paid him.

I went on Google and found the same ignition coil for £14.99 including postage. I ordered it and it is the same package as AA man had. On the package of AA patrol man, it was written £27.37 or so but he deleted it with his pen in front of me. He tried to keep the package with him but I requested him to give it to me.

I rang AA customer services of these high charges and told them that he might have made a mistake in charging. A set of four would have cost me a similar amount.

So, I got a reply from the DAS Insurance that the Patrol man also charges his labour for replacing the coil and here is the letter sent by DAS:-

I would appreciate your opinion please. My car registration Number in Y578MCD.

Could I buy warranty on my old car?

Do RAC gives a better deal than AA? I have found DAS Legal services are hopeless and I can’t understand why my Insurance Broker recommends me this company?

Hmmm,

So your car was broken and he diagnosed the issue and repaired your car (including supplying the new part) for the princely sum of £57.50. I would say you got a bargain there.

Unless you knew what the issue was and could fix it yourself then a garage would have charged way more (I suspect) for the initial diagnosis, supply the new part and fit it.

If it were me I would think myself fortunate that I hadn't spent quite a bit more to repair my car. Hardly "exorbitant" in my view.

Bargain IMHO - £57 to come to your home/ work (under AA sub) , diagnose, supply & fit!!

Most garages would charge for diagnosis, the part and at least 1/2 hour time - so roughly 1.5 -3 x the £57.00 bill.

I agree, I think you got a bargain, OP!

I'm afraid you're never going to be able to buy the cheapest car parts from someone like an AA patrol. I'm sure it would be exactly the same were you to buy a battery from them.

But, they do come to your car, find out what's wrong and then offer to sell you the parts and fix it. You don't have to accept, you could just receive their diagnosis, which would be free.

The only part I've ever bought from an AA patrol was a fan belt; yes, it was a long time ago. Charged me £5, I wasn't going to argue. I was just so very pleased he had one in his van and was able to get me going again.

As an ex AA Patrol all I'm going to say is that members voted for demutualisation in 1999 and accepted £248 in return for their share of the association. From that day onwards the AA has only ever been interested in profit.
