I'm afraid it's a case of "They all sound like that Sir".

Some friends of ours have the same model with the VW motor and, yes it does sound noisy from outside at least-but not too bad from inside.

Assuming that it's up to date service wise, STP oil treatment isn't going to make any difference to what is basically combustion noise in my experience.
