Range Rover Vogue 2003 BMW engine - Buying Advice - Steveieb

My son is seriously contemplating buying a beutiful example of this model . It has been privately owned and covered less than 70 K miles.

Consientiously maintained and in a lovely gold colour , its the best example I have seen.

May I ask for your experiences of this model and advice of what to look out for.

Electrics. Make sure absolutely everything works

Air suspension. Again, make sure it works, and it's pretty quick in adjusting in the different heights. If it doesn't then it could be a minor fault, or ££££ money.

Engine. These are pretty decent, and the diesels (allegedly) don't have the swirl flaps fitted that were the curse of the BMW 530d. However, they can have issues, just as any engine/turbo can have at 12 years old.

Gearbox ... this is a biggie. The gearbox fitted to the 3.0D rangerover isn't really up to the job. They are well-known of for having problems, and failing. The one in the 4.4 petrol is a lot better.

Differentials, propshafts can all give problems, especially at this age. Basically, he's got to always remember that he's looking at a car that is 12 years old.

HJ always says that the costs to fix a car are not based on what YOU paid for it, but on what it cost when new. He's really got to ask himself if he can afford to fix a £50k car, when it does break down - note, 'when' not 'if' !

There is a very good Rangie forum at fullfatrr.com

Finally, if he does buy one, then they are sublime when working. Luxury motoring. Not cheap to run (diesels do 25mpg, petrols do 16-19mpg). But whatever he does, never, ever, take it to a main agent. Find a good indie and make use of them.

Most grateful for this comprehensive advice. Sounds like you have plenty of experience of these lovely but often troublesome vehicles. Have you owned one ?

Our local Land Rover indie is stacked out with work and has 20 customers turning up everyday. He just can't cope. But with charges of £130 just to plug the car in - no wonder!

I haven't owned one, I've owned 2 ! (glutton for punishment, me). Along with one of the older P38 types.

My second one was the only really problematic one. A few years old, and it had electrical gremlins, which was an absolute swine to trace. Symptoms were the audio/nav shutting down, random bongs going off, but the cause was eventually traced back to a poor earth in the tailgate wiper.

Oh, another thing to look for. The audio/nav units are in the boot, and often suffer water ingress, which can cause loads of other electrical problems. Check for signs of dampness, both on the side where the units are, and in the wheel well .
