Electrics. Make sure absolutely everything works
Air suspension. Again, make sure it works, and it's pretty quick in adjusting in the different heights. If it doesn't then it could be a minor fault, or ££££ money.
Engine. These are pretty decent, and the diesels (allegedly) don't have the swirl flaps fitted that were the curse of the BMW 530d. However, they can have issues, just as any engine/turbo can have at 12 years old.
Gearbox ... this is a biggie. The gearbox fitted to the 3.0D rangerover isn't really up to the job. They are well-known of for having problems, and failing. The one in the 4.4 petrol is a lot better.
Differentials, propshafts can all give problems, especially at this age. Basically, he's got to always remember that he's looking at a car that is 12 years old.
HJ always says that the costs to fix a car are not based on what YOU paid for it, but on what it cost when new. He's really got to ask himself if he can afford to fix a £50k car, when it does break down - note, 'when' not 'if' !
There is a very good Rangie forum at fullfatrr.com
Finally, if he does buy one, then they are sublime when working. Luxury motoring. Not cheap to run (diesels do 25mpg, petrols do 16-19mpg). But whatever he does, never, ever, take it to a main agent. Find a good indie and make use of them.
