Hyundai Santa Fe - Faulty mpg gauge on Santa Fe - drc007

Hi

I bought the 2014 Santa as a demonstrator 2013 I know thats daft but thats what they called , for six months no problems but then the MPG avg gauge would do all sorts of strange things. It woud slowly drop from 41 down to 34 ish and then crash to zero before starting to build back up as it did it went past 40 and continued up to as high as 65mpg,before dropping back to 41 and then repeating the process . It could happen after 10 miles or a 200 .

Hyundai having spent 18 months trying to sort it agreed tp change tye car with a small charge, to a brand new one. Well done Hyundai, sadley after only 40 miles the gauge has gone upto 55 and zero again , so it would seem I have wasted money on this new car .

Any Ideas would be welcome as Hyundai have not got a clue.

My suggestion is simple. Ignore the mpg gauge, its nothing but a toy. It does not contribute to the way the car drives, its reliability or it ability to perform its intended use i.e. that of a car. If you want an accurate mpg figure calculate it yourself over several tank fills.

If that is your only problem in life you are very lucky.

iF YOU ARE UNABLE TO BE COSTRUCTIVE RATHER THAN SARCASTIC DONT BOTHER. THANKS FOR NOTHING

And if all you can do IS SHOUT AND BE SARCASTIC at other people on here, then you'll find you don't get much in the line of help or sympathy.

As skidpan has said, it is a minor fault : it is not something safety critical, or which makes the car unusable.

However, in a lot of cases, the problem is not with the instrumentation, but with the Mark 1 idiot using it. Have you actually read the instruction handbook (yes, PROPERLY), to make sure you are using it correctly ?

I ask this because my mum had similar issues with her Golf : however, it turned out that she was "press/holding" the button which swaps over on the readings, rather than "quick-pressing", so was resetting the guage each time.

As skidpan has said, if this is your only gripe on a car, then maybe you need to look at the important things in life.

Oh, and try not to get so riled up next time.

I see the type of people that use this site ,I DID NOT START THE SARCASAM.

as for shouting I dont know what you mean.

I was asking for constuctive advice which i am afriad skid pan was not really forth coming with any.

Hyundai have had the vehicle back so many times to rectify a fault on what was a reasonably priced car ( to coin a phrase) and not been able to sort.

I am fully aware that I can do a caclulation , and have done so, but that does not detract from the fact that it should work as it has on many other cars I have owned.

I have in fact heard back from Hyundai today who are now acknowledging that there is a problem and will be coming back shortly with a solution.

I am sorry that you seem to accept if something dose not work on a new car that it is ok, Im don't and it will now sorted, and no doubt help others who haave the same problem in the future.

It is a good idea to try and see things from someone elses point of veiw, can you not understand how frustrating it was after 18 months of trying to it sorted and paying out another lump of cash just to have the same problem.

Rather then ending with the sarcastic comment as skid pan did.

How wise you are , shall we just leave it there. I dont really consider any worth in continuing this pathetic conversation with you, when there are others who are able to .Please dont waste any more of your or my time . unless it makes you feel more superior.

It looks to me as though its working fine, its only an average mpg and I dont know of an accurate one, as far as I know they work on speed accelerater position over a given time span, so it would be impossible to be accurate

I really cant see how they class it as faulty as they were only ever meant to be an average estimate of fuel consumption, not an accurate one thats why they fluctuate like they do its fuel comsumption at that point in time

Hi and thanks for your reply, I understand it is an average but when the reading can go up as high as 85 on several occasions and down to zero something is not quite right. I have never had any other vary like this , yes I agree that that they are not to be relied on but should be ble to provide something approaching meaningful.

Hyundai have contacted me today and have had others now with the same proble, up until now I was the only one, including one of there tech team.

As soon as I have an answer I will post it as it may be of interest to others.

thanks again

I have one on my Civic 06 Diesel also had it on 2010 civic 1.8 petrol, I think most cars have them it goes from 0 to 100 depending on what accelerator position is and speed i`m doing,

if I sit in traffic not going anywhere its reading 0, if I blip the throttle it will jump around up to 100 mpg, as I drive it jumps anywhere it feels like even doing a steady say 40mph it moves around and never stays in one place, so its impossible to get an average

In actual fact, at that rate we all have faulty mpg meters

You are not the first person to complain about it as the ford granadas of the 80`s had the same thing and everyone thought they should be very accurate and not an average, never happened though

Thanks for that but this the first of many cars that i have owned that has done this.

Hyundai are looking at it now and i will update as and when I find out
