New Seat Leon 5dr 2.0TDi 184PS FR - Best hatchback, advice? - playerjs
Hi all,

I am in the market for a hatchback and have decided to go for a Seat Leon because it offers a good balance of tech, interior, exterior and standard goodies they come with with regards to FR models.

I have a couple of questions regarding which car I should go for... I have managed to negotiate a price of £22,500 for 5dr 2.0TDi 184PS FR with Tech Pack and £1,525 addons. I have also negotiated a price of £20,500 for the 5dr 1.4ECo 150PS FR with Teck Pack and £1525 options.

I will be the main user and doing quite a lot of short journeys but my dad will be using the car to do longer journeys. Buying the car on 0% 3yr PCP finance, the GMFV of the TDi at the end of 3yrs will be £10,100 roughly and GMFV of 1.4eco is around £8700 both on a 10k/year mileage basis respectively.

I am geeky so I worked out the difference will be £544.83 with regards to the total payable over 3yrs. I can save a further £894 on the TDi and £1198 on the 1.4 respectively if I went through drivethedeal.com but essentially that means a difference of £304 overall with regards to total payable over 3yrs.

So based on this long winded post, I have a couple of questions and seek some advice. Any contribution would be appreciated.

Q1. Is this deal worth it? i.e is it worth buying brand new?
Q2. Which is better 1.4 or TDi?
Q3. Can I trust www.drivethedeal.com?
Q4. Is there a better hatchback with similar mod/cons and looks?

Please help ASAP I need to make up my mind by end of June.
Thanks in Advance
Jon

Q1 -- buying brand new might be worth it if you keep the car a good few years and get you money's worth out of it. The first 3 years will see it losing 60% of its value --which is what you're paying for in your monthly PCP payments of course. It's usually far better value to buy nearly new but if you can afford it and want the warranty etc then nothing wrong with it! But it's not cheap motoring.

Drive the deal are entirely reputable.

By all accounts the 1.4 petrol is a great engine and you avoid any possible DPF issues. Your mileage doesn't justify a diesel really.

I wouldn't get completely hung up on the VAG stable as there are lots of other good options. Have you looked at Mazda 3 /Ford Focus/Civic as comparison? Octavia is probably more spacious and better value, same car basically. Golf is same car but more expensive badge! If going VAG I would choose either Seat or Skoda -- your proposed choice is actually a very nice car.

I agree - go for the 1.4 TSI. It's as torquey as a diesel and not far off in terms of economy. Doing 10,000 miles a year it would take too long to recoup the extra cost of the TDI by (smallish) fuel savings - and also you won't have the DPF problem on short journeys.

Also, I think the days of diesels holding their value better than petrols are numbered, largely becaus of the scares in the press but also because of the new efficient petrol engines coming on the market like the VW Group 1.4 TSI and 2.0 TSI.

Got a 1.4 TSi Leon SE 5 door. Great car.

Only do 8000 mile year so bought the petrol. At the time I bought it I worked out using HJ's real mpg figures it would take 65,000 miles to recoup the additonal purchase price of the diesel assuming 6p a litre difference and assuming I recoup £1000 of the extra I paid for the diesel at resale time.

Petrol every time unless you do a huge mileage.

But its not the same for every brand.

Have a good long test drive. VAG group seats (not SEATS!) do not suit a lot of people.

Price sounds high to me. Would drive the deal or carwow not do a new one for less?

DTD quote 18946 for the diesel(150) 5dr with mettalic and tech pack 5dr manual, 19729 for the 184 bhp and £17395 for the 1.4tsi ACT

I have recently replaced a diesel golf with a Leon 1.4tsi.I thought I might miss the torque but the Leon is excellent and runs well at low revs (doing 70mph the other day at 2200 revs). The Leon is much quieter in use than the golf and the technology pack is brilliant.Mines the SE but the FR is even better equipped.Since my last fill I have averaged 51mpg although I live in a rural area so less traffic jams.Got 45 in traffic recently so no complaints from me.

Thanks guys... for all the great input and advice, I really appreciate it.

The Seat guys are now trying to sell me the 1.8TSI FR. Its more on tax, bad on fuel economy, etc. I desperately need a car asap.

My only dilema is that the Seat guys are saying that the lead times of the 1.4EcoTSi is around 12 weeks and could be double because of back log in orders...

As such I should go for the 1.8TSi as they are saying it will arrive quicker around 12 weeks.

I feel like they are spinning me a story...I have tried carwow option too and the quotes are actually more than the price offered by my local dealer.

I have also explored the DTD option...but I can't get hold of them on the phone...do I just order via them, i.e. do I just go with the finance quote and then wait to hear back from them?

Many thanks

Jon

When I went to the local Seat dealer he went onto Seat UK website. There was a lot of pre registered cars at excellent discounts with no miles on them.Might be worth asking?

Yea I did kind of consider the pre-reg cars but I wanted these options....

  • New Leon 1.4 EcoTSI 150 FR 5dr [Technology Pack] - £20525
  • Metallic Nevada White Paint - £575
  • Performance alloy wheels - £385
  • Seat Leon Sound - £365
  • FR cloth - Black/Grey - £0
  • Convenience pack plus - £200
  • Rear view Camera - £215
  • Full link - £150
  • Foil sills with Leon logo - £85
  • Brings the total to £22,500
  • Dealer has offered me it for = £20425

>>which is now cheaper than drivethedeal.com so I am quite happy.

>>DTD.com discount includes £1100 discount if you take HP finance..which I am not, so that's +£1100 and a further addition of £1000 if I go for 0% PCP finance.

>>very misleading info but after reading it a few times and chatting to my local Seat dealer and also DTD (who sound uninterested and very shady).

Best Regards

Jon
