Audi A3 tfsi 2.0 Quattro - Premium Petrol - T908
My 2010 A3 tfsi has covered 56000 miles, the engine uses very little oil. I'd like to keep the car for a couple more years. Would it be worth running on premium petrol, would this reduce carbon build up on the valves or would it have little effect as the fuel doesn't pass through/over the valves to clean them anyway? Also is there much difference between ESSO Supreme and Shell V Power and could you switch between the two if one wasn't available?

How else do you think it gets to the top of the pistons?

What does the owner's manual say about recommended fuel? I seem to remember that VW/Audi manuals for the turbocharged engines used to say something along the lines of "using 97/98 octane fuels may make a small improvement to performance / economy" as they have the capability to slightly increase turbo boost to exploit the properties of the higher octane fuel.

In which case, try premium brew and see what you think. Whether it will reduce any carbon build-up is impossible to say - the fuel vendors claim their fuels do this, but you'd need to strip the top end of the engine to prove it. You can switch between premium brands without problems.

As this is a direct injection fsi engine, fuel is injected directly into the cylinder below the valves, similar to a diesel engine. So any type of fuel is unlikely to prevent build up of gunge in the inlet tract/ manifold. An unfortunate side effect of direct injection engines.

Generally speaking, any engine will run better on better quality fuel. That pretty much goes without saying. The engine may feel more responsive and your MPG may also improve. Whether or not the benefits of using it outweighs the cost is open to debate. Some say it does, others say not. One thing is certain though. Using it will do no harm. You'll just have to monitor it over a period of time and make a decision on whether or not it's worth it for you.

I think i have seen that all fsi engines run better on 98 ron as it produces less miss fires. Further the quote mpg is based on 98ron

Interesting, yes I will do some exact mpg check on the current fuel. Next month the dealer is going to fit a new catalytic converter at very little cost to me. So to be extra nice to the new cat I will start running on Premium petrol from then. Seems HJ is convinced Shell V-Power is the best.

Thanks for the confirmation, kinda what I suspected.

Thanks for your reply Craig. Good thinking, checked manual and it says 95 Ron. I hear what you're saying and will give the higher octane fuel a go. However if fuel price rise again to last years high I will probably think again.
