Having found 13 reg 320d M Sport Tourer that fits my spec and budget I've verbally agreed a 'price to change' with a dealer after 'agreeing' a fair trade in price on my current car. I've paid a £500 refundable deposit to hold the car which I will view at the weekend. I'm now regretting saying I was happy with the 'price to change' as I've only haggled on the trade in price not the remaining asking price of the new car.

Any advice how to get a better deal when I view the car would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks.

Difficult to answer that! Whether the dealer adds something to your PX value or knocks it off the price of the new car doesn't make a lot of difference to the customer.

Only you know how hard you've haggled: I suppose it's worth a try to see if the dealer has any more to give, but a 2-year-old 320d should sell quite easily so don't be surprised if the dealer doesn;t give any more away.g

I've verbally agreed a 'price to change'

The price to change is exactly what it says. Its the amount of cash needed to change from one motor to another. It takes into acount the price of the new one and the value of the old one. No more haggling to be done, that what you will have to pay.

Or walk away.

You have fallen for the car dealers top tricks. Getting a deposit on a car you have not seen.

Due to the internet and a willingness to ship cars around to gain a sale. Dealers hedge their bets by asking for a deposit before viewing the car. Often temping customers with a lost leader car on the internet, that for some odd reason has just been sold or not right for the customer.

while an agreement to purchase a car subject to condition with a refund deposit is ok. It limits your changes of gaining a better price and rightly so.

I would in some cases pay a deposit max of £250 refundable no conditions. I would enter a dealership know the value of my car webuyanycar.com is good guide to the value of your car and would know the value of any car i intended buying based remembering to adjust for milage/colour.

Remember the guy selling the car is earning his bread and butter and if you want a good deal you need to do your homework first.

Thank you for the replies guys.

Slkfanboy - You're quite right and I knew I'd been played as soon as I put the phone down, it all happend in a flash and I opened my mouth without applying any thought!

He reeled me in by offering £500 over webuyanycar.com's valuation of my current car without viewing it (which is significant for a 53 reg C220).

Today the BMW is still being advertised online, no deposit has been taken from my account and no word from the dealer, which seems odd.

Would it be best to refrain from contacting him and let him do the leg work?

TBH the excitment of this deal has wained and I'm prepared to wait for another car to come to market in order to get a better deal...

Hi, sorry for jumping off the topic. Would you consider selling c220 privately? I'm looking for one. Thanks

Is this what he told you, or the figure you've checked with webuyanycar.com's website?
