Our Yaris Hybrid is coming up to 2 years old now and still serving our needs just about (a bit of extra space could sometimes be useful). The dealer phoned today saying they could put us in a new Yaris for the same monthly payments.

I am slightly tempted, but would want to take along some prices from some internet brokers to try and fry the best deal. Does anyone have any experience of whether dealers will match the prices from brokers such as Drive the Deal? I have always managed to negotiate some discount, but never huge amounts, so am wondering if I might be able to lower the monthly payments (I'm on a PCP).

Of course my brain is telling me to stick with this car, but for the same outlay each month, the only consideration would be entering into a new PCP contract,Munich doesn't concern me and if I do keep this Yaris I would probably buy another Toyota in a years time.

I could also try to negotiate an Auris for a similar monthly sum, depends how brave I'm feeling! I may pop in to the dealer after I have taken a funeral tomorrow morning!

Another broker worth trying is coast2coast - when we were recently looking at a new Z4, C2C could do £7200 off list, our local dealer (after a bit of work) came to within £140 of that. As C2C use a BMW dealer in London (oh, the wonder of owner's forums on the internet), and we are in North Wales, we decided to stay local, and save having to drive down to pick up the car

My elder daughter had four Yarises on PCPs, each successive one slightly cheaper per month than the one before. If you're on a 3-year PCP, any time after 2 years can be a good time to change; the alternative is to keep it long-term and pay the 'balloon payment' at the end of the PCP contract. The car is then yours and you have the benefit of the 5-year warranty, BUT it will be more expensive when eventually you do want to change.

You can probably get an Auris for the same monthly payment, but possibly not the Hybrid. You'd have to work out how much cheaper to run the Hybrid is compared with a 'normal' petrol.

My daughter then changed to a Hyundai i10 which was much cheaper than another Yaris; she's been very happy with it and another is on order. You may like to look at the cost of an i20 or i30 compared with a Toyota - also perhaps a Skoda Fabia.

I'm curious about your reference to Munich - is it that BMWs don't concern you, or maybe you've just been saying the morning / evening prayer responses with 'Give peace in our time, O Lord' !

Avant, your daughter seems to enjoy changing her cars? Is this a knock-on effect of the PCP system, making it easy for dealers to tempt owners to change, maybe more often than they otherwise would?

Basically no. Due to the margins its very unlikely. What you need to consider as your monthly payments. The cost of finance + devaluation i.e. the total payable is what you need to consider. look at contractcars.com alway have good deals. I would not be surprised if a auris would cost about the same monthly as your pay now.

Thanks all. Not sure how the Munich reference snuck in, I think spellcheck was having an off day, it should have read 'which'.

Anyway, popped into the dealer and asked about the Auris. Not impressed with the dealer really. First, they valued my 2 year old Yaris as being worth £8.5k which I didn't think was very generous (and also wouldn't move on that price, saying all Toyota dealers got their trade in prices from the same place, and that the low mileage wouldn't mean it was worth any more!).

The quotes I took from Drive the Deal and Carwow ( which were from various Toyota dealers around the country who submit offers- I think that's how that site works) were almost dismissed. They spent an age coming up with figures, and then said that they couldn't match the quotes, and that Drive the Deal and Carwow must be making a loss!

The cheapest quote I had was for £17300, for an Icon Plus, and the dealer only got as low as £19,800. The salesman even brought the finance bloke out on to the sales floor to explain it all! They ended by saying if I can get an Auris for £17,300 elsewhere then I should get it from elsewhere!

Their final quote for the finance worked out at £350 a month. I am currently paying £220 a month, so I wasn't very impressed! Think I'll keep the Yaris for a bit longer!

The low mileage comment is BS. We gave a Toyota dealer a DTD price on our Aygo, they wouldn't match it.

The dealers don't make a loss, the Toyota dealer who provides it will have a contract to supply DTD. Ours came from Ipswich Toyota.

Is a new Auris really almost £20,000?

I can't see how changing a new car after 2-3 years can make financial sense. It loses half its value in that time. Surely better to keep it as long as it remains reliable.

personally I change when warranty expires, so next for the Kia is sept 2020. Why? Repair costs!

My small cars started to go wrong at 7 years old, with about 15,000k miles per year. A food independent garage is much cheaper than a main dealer, and sometimes better.

As always, finance is of course a vital consideration in buying cars but it isn't the only one. Olivia is a nanny who has great expertise in child care but none in car mechanics: she often has small children in her car and above all it needs to be reliable.

It makes sense to change towards the end of each 3-year PCP. After four 1.3 Yarises a Hyundai i10 1.2 was a lot cheaper and has done the job equally well: a new i10 is on order.
