Afternoon all,

So I need to get rid of my Audi A3 and get an estate. We have a baby girl on the way and a golden retreiver - so going to need the room!

After having the pleasure of owning an A3 for 7 years I want something of a good build quality but also a big boot. Looking around a Mazda 6, Audi A6, Passsat and Octavia seem the options.

I do about 12k a year - so either a petrol or diesel is an option.

Open to comments and suggestions!

Thanks,

First of all congratulations on the impending arrival!

I was in the same position a couple of years back. Estate definately the way to go - bigger the better, don't bother with Focus or Astra-size! I do similar mileage to you, so could of gone either way re: fuel.

In the end got a petrol Avensis estate, but looked at Passats Mondeos, Mazda 6's, Accords (I tend to prefer Japanese cars). My Avensis has been great - well screwed together, petrol is decent in terms of economy for the size, but main thing is it's really comfortable for the family on trips, quiet and the boot is huge - so I'd maybe add Avensis, Mondeo and Accord to your list.

Probably best to go and have a sit in any/ all them and test drive.

I've now got a second child, the car easily gets a double buggy in so glad I went for the large estate. Don't need a roofbox..yet

BTW had an Octavia estate as a rental the other week, very nice car but boot not quite as big in comparison.

Enjoy

An Avensis will certainly have enough room, but the corresponding Octavia estate should be cheaper (whether you're buying new or used). I'm on my third Octavia and it can swallow a huge amount of stuff (and there's the even bigger Superb estate as well).

Get one with a variable boot floor as it's much easier for a dog to get into through the tailgate.

Skoda Rapid Spaceback is a well build vw based car and if you beleive the warranty direct league tables the most reliable of vw/audi/seat bunch of cars and within your budget.

The Tepid Spaceback is hardly an estate.

I wouldn't jump yet. Wait until the new arrival is here and see how you go with the A3. You can then buy a vehicle based on real life experience and requirements, rather than what you think you will need.

You will also be able to go and see a few cars with the baby, pram etc with you to see how practical the cars are.

I have noticed some estates have very poor rear legroom - once a baby becomes a toddler (it happens much quicker than you think) they like kicking the rear of the seat in front!

Thanks for all the messages, the Avensis looks like a decent car for the money.

The biggest book we have measured clear is a Mazda 6 - but I agree maybe we should wait until the baby arrives and see how we go for space.

Thanks for your imput chaps.

I wouldn't wait. No way will a Golden Retriver and a pushchair/pram will fit in an A3!

Look at Volvos too...V50s or preferably V70s.

Consider a Mondeo estate? For £15k you'll get a very late low mileage highly specced last generation Mondeo.

The Octavia boot capacity is 610 litres, the Avensis 509. I think only the new Passat, Merc E Class and soon to be replaced Superb beat the Octavia.

With its great length, I would have expected the Mondeo to beat the Octavia: looking at HJ's review I see that it's only 525 litres (all measurements are with rear seats up).

If you need the space, the Octavia does seem to be the best answer, given that the others mentioned by Oldtoffee are all more expensive, both new and secondhand.

Don't overlook the Kia Ceed SW.

We have had one for almost 5 years now and so far its been 100% reliable, spacious and comfortable.

When we bought it we looked at alternatives and as a complete package we simply could not find better. For the record we looked at the Octavia, Avensis, Mondeo, Focus, Passat (and probably several I have forgotten).

Now 5 years later we still find its packaging unbeatable. We are due to replace it later this summer but none of the alternatives have the same combination of passenger vs luggage space vs overall size.

We have looked at the new Mondeo, small boot for its size, huge rear passenger space but huge external size.

We have looked at the new 308 SW. Same overall size as the Ceed with a huge boot but very poor rear seat space.

The Seat Leon SW is a better compromise than the 308 but the rear seat space is no better than the Leon hatch we have despite being bigger overall.

So why don't we buy another Ceed SW. Simple answer, we want a petrol and the only petrol available in the Ceed SW is a poor 1.4 non-turbo version that is slow and thirsty.

If we wanted or could justify another diesel it would be the current model Ceed SW which having looked at it is both nicer to look at, has the same passenger/luggage packaging and is far nicer inside, not driven one yet but all reports indicate its better than ours.

All is not lost though, there is a petrol turbo Ceed SW being introduced later this year that may well satisfy our needs. Problem might be its only a 1.0 petrol and as such might be a bit weedy. If we wait that long we shall see.

£16.5k gets you a good spec brand new Ceed (diesel) estate from drive the deal. 7 year warranty with the OPs 12k miles a year makes it look attractive. Bigger boot than a Mondeo.

I'd forgotten the Kia Ceed. According to the What Car review it has 528 litres (seats up) which is about the same as the Mondeo without its excessive overall length. Worth a look if it's big enough for you.
