Kia - Buying mistake - Dealer told me car had one owner. - Matthews28

Hi there,

Ive been looking for a new used car for a month or so, and found one that sounded decent, but being new to buyer frkm dealerships Ive realised Ive made a few mistakes.

Anyway, Ive put a deposit down for the car and was told it had one owner. When I did a car check online tonight it says 2. So now Im starting to question the accuracy of thr mileage. I know I should of checked all this prior to paying a deposit but was soo tired of constantly finding a car I was looking for was gone at several other dealers made me forget whar to check, now I know Id lose my deposit if I pulled now, but if the car has done more then it says then Id not want it.

Also, I know that I've shot my self in the foot by paying the deposit, but do you think I could use the fact they've told me one thing and then Ive found out its wrong to bring the price down a little bit?

Thank you for your time,

If you have written proof e.g. copy of an advert that states one owner the car has been misrepresented and you would get your deposit back.

If it was just salesman speak you have no chance. Believe it or not salesmen lie.

I suggest it's worth checking a bit further before you give up on this car if it's otherwise what you want. Depending what you find it may be acceptable but still something you can use to get a more of the price. For example two apparent owners might be a preregistered car (owner 1) followed by its first real user owner (owner 2). That wouldn't bother most people. On the other hand if it's two real owners I 'd only be worried if this was unusually many for the age of car. We don't have the age and declared mileage so can't say if two owners would be a lot. . As to mileage can you ask to see service history - if it's still in Kia network the details will presumably be online for the dealer to confirm. Skidpan is spot-on with the representation position. Finally you haven't been caught by the "one previous owner " weasel words have you? Some traders use that to mean current plus one previous owner. Irs a widely used but I think underhand practice to describe owners in this way.

I bet it is "one previous" so the current one + 1.

It isn't really weasel words but a standard term used by the DVLA and most advertising systems.

If you enter an advert onto ebay, Autotrader whatever using the reg number and auto-look-up tool they all use the "No. of previous owners" term.

Unless it is 2 weeks old I doubt it makes a lot of odds. You could always ask to see the V5 which will have both keepers names on it so you can get a picture of where it has been and what it has been doing.

All dealers do that - its one owner (prior to the current owner - usually muttered under their breath!) so always add one!
