VW Golf MK 5 1.9 TDI - Engine stalled and failed to started - Perfection

Hi....

Sister's car was stalled at a traffic light and tried to restart the engine. It cranked and the engine turned but does not fire up. No engine managemeng light came on.

It eventually started when I cranked in excess of 20 times over 10 minutes period. When car started I tried to rev the engine to around 2000 rpm as the car was still cold. The car engine hesitated to increase in speed. It then stalled. Again I tried multiples times of cranking and pumping the accelerator and eventually started and allows the engine to warm up before joining the motorway.

We managed to drive the car on the motorway for 20 miles and filled up with new fuel just in case it was bad fuel. We got home and parked up now. We haven't tried starting the car this morning, so what should we do next?

But now having thinking about the behaviour of the above scenario, could this be related to a failing crank shaft sensor?

You can't guess with problems like these.Get it hooked up to some diagnostic equipt to see if there are any relevant faults logged.

The car started ok this morning and will need to get scan tool to check code. Is there one recommended for around £50?

Generic EOBD scantools are cheap enough and I've seen them on Amazon for as little as £12. You can also buy an EOBD Bluetooth device that will connect to your smartphone (not Apple iOS though) for not much more. EOBD scantools will only check engine emission data, so don't expect to be able to check anything that's manufacturer specific or ABS, Airbag, instruments and so on.

VCDS is the best tool available but that will cost you about £260, and you'll need a laptop. You can get a cut down cheaper version called VCDS Lite. This may do what you want but it's not as comprehensive as the full version.

There is a VAG handheld tool called V scan or something like that. I've never tried it and so I don't know what it's like. Do a Google search.

If all else fails look on other VAG forums for someone near you with VCDS who could help you. I have it and I'm in Hampshire if that helps.

Crankshaft sensor sounds likely...

Car cut out again this morning at a junction. Attempted to restart, and took many times of cranking and started and managed to park at a safe place and cut out again.

Call RAC and mechanic asked me to crankthe engine and whilst he uses his hand to bang the fuel tank area. The car car started after a few bang. He said it is a sticky tank fuel pump. He also said there will be no fault being logged, so no need to ask garage to interrogate ECU. Just change the pump.

The car is at the garage now for pump replacement. So I hope this post will help others having the same symptom.

Perfect.
