Clarification needed. My daughter recently renewing her car insurance was contacted by the insurer to say a search showed that she had had 3 claims in the last 5 years and not 1 as she stated online. In fact, she had one claim against her for a minor bump to a parked car, £480, so she challenged this and was told that 2 windscreen replacements (on different vehicles) counted as claims. This is news to me and I don't recall having to note any such incident when renewing my own insurance.

Most companies count glass replacement as a claim, although such a claim may not affect your NCD - check your policy.

When I get insurance quotes and they ask about previous claims within the last 3 or 5 years (differs with companies) I always tell them about windscreen claims - replace or repair (if any) but the response has always been that they are not interested in those claims.

Must be a dodgy company your daughter is with or there is something else behind the story we don't know.

I'm not surprised, some glass replacements cost serious amounts of money.

Cost me £400 last year for a new laminated rear screen for my old MB and that was very cheap (last one available till the next batch are made, genuine's over £1k), some aftermarket MB CL model rear screens are over £2k, OK these unusual items are at the outer limits for normal cars but you can see why insurers are wary and ask the question.

Haven't claimed for glass for many years, a bit of local indy searching can see a new windscreen supplied and fitted for little more than the typical excess on a common car if you avoid the usual suspects that spend a fortune on advertising.

Yes, windscreen claims count as 'claims'...

My problem has been trying to remember how many, and when?

[although I've never had more than one claim per car]

There's a report in this month's Car Mechanics mag about an XC90 which needed a camera reset by the dealer at a cost of £400 after a windscreen replacement.

Even more worringly, this recalibration may be needed after anything from a new track rod end to a coil spring!!!

My insurance was up for renewal recently and all the companies I got quotes from explicitly stated that windscreen claims did need to be declared.

My wife had a screen replaced just before Christmas, insurance due last week. Replacement windscreen was an option on the 'claims in last 5 years' drop down.

Made no difference to the premium as they price matched the lowes quote we had, which was less than last year.

Some insurers even want to know about windscreen chip repairs - always best to declare everything

Didn't make any difference to premium for me

All posts much appreciated. Conclusion seems to be that some companies specifically include windscreen claims, some don't, either way needs checking and so far no confirmation that these claims affect NCD calculations. Unless .....

I have never heard of any insurance company reducing your NCB beacause of a windsceen claim but as in all instances with insurers you need to tell them of all relevant information. No issues in the future then.

Potential insurers are only seeking to discover claims history.

I've checked my last renewal notice which states " 7 years NCD" from the insurer that covered the windscreen replacement !

I used the various comparison sites to get quotes recently, then realised I had forgotten to include a windscreen claim from 2013. When I added this it made no difference to the quotes so I went with the cheapest (which happened to be SAGA).

Only once I'd paid and received the (e)paperwork did I spot an endorsement raising the windscreen excess from their normal £75 to £125.

Wonder what the rationale is to justify that increase ? Or is it that windscreen costs have risen generally ?
