BMW 5 Series or Audi A6 - £3-£5k budget - abs982

Hi recently sold my Mercedes e220 cdi avantgarde auto and downgraded to Honda civic 1.8 es petrol manual and man do I miss the Merc and not to forget how good having an auto was.

So back to the drawing board - I have a budget £3-£5k and was considering a BMW 520d-530d auto obvouusly considering the fact with this budget they will be high mileage BMW's.

Any advice or should I look for something else? Audi A6 2.7 TDI perhaps?

Main factors are: has to be family car, auto, decent mpg, preferably diesel (approx 10k miles per year), readily available parts, and a pleasure to drive.

Ooo, how's about a SAAB 9-5 like mine? Parts are readily available despite what many may think. The 1.9TiD would suit your budget and requirements, an engine found in Vauxhalls, FIATs and Alfas, so dealers/specialists are easy to find.

At 10,000 miles a year I'd go for a good petrol 5 series, at the lower end of your budget. The £2,000 remaining should easily cover the extra fuel used compared with a diesel

BMW chain driven diesel engines are a better bet than a Audi belt driven engine IMHO. I have had Merc,BMW,Audi and rank them in that order.
