Family Hatch with Cruise Control - The23rdman

My wife has a 54 plate Avensis that has been a really solid car, but she's injured her knee and it's going to be long term enough that she will need something with cruise control for longer journeys.

There isn't going to be a lot of cash to throw at this - pretty much what the Avensis is worth so just over a grand - so I know options may be limited, but what would you guys suggest?

I think you will struggle to find anything for around £1k with cruise control.High spec Ghia models Focus or Mondeo? .Honda Accord?Possible other Jap models.?

Family Hatch with Cruise Control - The23rdman

I don't mine it having some miles on it.

I'd suggest considering fitting an aftermarket CC unit, it's likely to be cheaper than changing car, unless you have a desire to change car for other reasons too

Pretty much all of the later versions of the Mk 3 Mondeo (2000-2007) came with cruise and these are as cheap as chips now. Any old Merc with an auto gearbox should come with cruise as well.

Family Hatch with Cruise Control - The23rdman

Smileyman, it's hardly worth it on a car this age, I'd have thought?

pd, that's very helpful, thank you. I'd imagine a Mondeo would be the best bet all told. I might be able to stretch the budget to 1500, but we're still looking at the same cars really.

I wonder if OP has experience of cruise control. I 've used it a lot and it's rare that you don't have to use your right foot a fair bit. Depends on the injury of course and maybe it's a case of every little helps. Meanwhile a left field suggestion is the unloved Vauxhall Signum? Will be lower price or newer than alternatives and may be worth condiering in these particular circumstances.

1st generation Mazda 6, made from 02-07.

TS trim and above have cruise control as standard.

Similar size to the avensis, and pretty cheap now as the Mazda 6 is into its 3rd generation.

Had one for 2 years and 45k miles. Good workhorse

I love cruise control, would never buy another car without it

BUT

unless the road is sufficiently clear to enable you to keep up a constant speed its pretty much unusable.

On single carraigeway roads with bends, juctions etc I would never consider using it.

On my 15 commute which after I am out of our village is mostly on dual carraigeways or good A roads I never use it.

But on a trip to Scotland mostly on motorways and dual carriageways at times when traffic is less than average its simply brilliant.

Family Hatch with Cruise Control - The23rdman

For clarity. Cruise would be for motorway work. Ali is fine in traffic, but the constant holding down of the gas is the problem.

Mazda is a good idea. We had a diesel Mazda 6 before the Avensis, but the clutch was too heavy for Ali.

If we do go down the Mondeo route which engines/years are to be avoided/sort after?

Family Hatch with Cruise Control - skidpan

Our 52 plate Mondeo had a very heavy clutch. Out 55 plate Focus was better in this respect.

Family Hatch with Cruise Control - The23rdman

Yeah, my Focus is nice and light too. I gues we'll go try a couple and see.

May be worth a call to Toyota.

Generally if the car is over a T2 spec tpyota can retro fit cruise control.

Had it fitted to my Auris TR at Toyota. It cost £175.

A Mondeo shouldn't really have a heavy clutch. If it has, it is usually a sign that it is worn.

The late Mk 3's from 2005-2007 ish are very cheap and are pretty good cars. A well looked after 1.8 LX/Ghia with Cruise should do the job OK for not a lot of money.

Alternatively, IIRC the T-Spirit Avensis has cruise so if you like the current car you could look out for one of them.

Family Hatch with Cruise Control - pd

To answer my own question - a quick search reveals a 2.0 Avensis 2005ish T-Spirit with cruise is easily obtainable for £1500 or less providing you don't mind 100k or so being on the odo.

Clutch was not warn, always heavy. Sold with only 36,000 miles on it. Others we tried were exactly the same.

Family Hatch with Cruise Control - The23rdman

Some good food for thought here. Another Avensis was the first thought, but couldn't find anything close to budget. I think we'll have what we get on the current one to spend so close to Christmas which might rule an Avensis out, but a Mondeo as a stopgap could work. There are dozens locally to choose from too.

I've found a few Mazda 6's to try too.

I'll also ask Toyota about retro fitting cruise.

Thanks for all your help, guys.

Most Peugeots and Citroens can have cruise control. Its generally fitted as standard on the GLX and SE models, but a good telltale sign if not is a pre-marked slot in the steering column plastics just below the indicator stalk.

Simply pick up a stalk from Ebay or Peugeot (no more than £40) and then get it activated by someone with the Lexia equipment.

There are plenty of guides on specific Pug / Citroen forums.

Thanks, but I don't want a French car. They're made out of old horse carts by artisans and styled by dadaists. okay, the 407 is alright, but I don't trust them after a few dodgy ones.

At your budget, condition is always going to be much more important than make or model. That said, the advantage of Fords is that there are lots of them around, so finding one with some service history and cruise control is that much easier. The Mazda 6 is a good idea if you can find one, but don't buy a diesel.

Family Hatch with Cruise Control - The23rdman

No, I wouldn't buy a Mazda 6 diesel simply because the two we've had/driven have had heavy clutches.

My Yaris 2012 has a hatch five seats and cruise control as standard equipment for the T-Spirit. So CC is making it's way to smaller and smaller cars...you'd be surprised. Thing I love most about it is the auto dimming rear view mirror. Thats so nice.

Balleballe beat me to it; I know he's had a Mazda 6 (02-07) like I have. It has cruise control on a TS spec and up. Great car. I do sometimes miss it on long journeys.
Family Hatch with Cruise Control - The23rdman

We tried a Mazda 6 and the clutch was as stiff as the diesel version so that's out of the equation. Ali tried a Mondeo too and really liked it, but was triubled by the height of the brake pedal. Are they all set-up the same? She struggled because it was quite a bit higher than the gas pedal.

Family Hatch with Cruise Control - Avant

Most of them are nowadays. I assume it's a safety issue - to reduce the chance of stepping on the accelerator when it should have been the brake.

Family Hatch with Cruise Control - The23rdman

Shame. We tried a Xsara Picasso today. Ali really liked it and I couldn't find much to fault it, but the suspension was a question. It went over a pothole and didn't sound great. I understand that this can be a problem with these?
